I opened my phone and submitted my resignation request to Chuck. Chuck rejected it. [Stay two more months. I’ll give you a five-hundred-dollar raise.] Five hundred dollars? I almost laughed out loud. I could make more than that just by selling my body. In a fit of anger, I sent that video directly to Chuck. Chuck’s face turned pale when he opened it. His fingers froze over the screen. [Where did you film that?! Delete it. Now!] I gave him a calm reply. [You can’t get away with something like that forever.]

"He won't be coming back." The silence on the other end stretched long enough to mean something. "And the pack?" Fenwick said. "Intact," Marcus said. "Everything that was taken from it — the territory, the trust, the years — none of that comes back overnight. But the thing that was rotting it from the inside is gone." He paused. "That's where it starts." Fenwick was quiet for a moment. "He called me this morning," he said. "Before your people came. I didn't answer."

The line was quiet for a long moment. "She's not a pawn Damien," Elias said finally. His voice had shifted, less lawyer now more friend. The version of Elias that appeared when things were serious enough to stop performing. "I did my own digging when I heard her name. Three years ago she uncovered internal fraud at her previous company. Alone. No backup. She built the entire case herself and handed it to the board so completely they had no choice." A pause. "She is the most dangerous kind of person, the kind who is genuinely good at what she does and genuinely means it. If you go into this treating her like a piece on a board…"

he murmured against my neck, his voice tinged with a sad sort of hope. I laughed, a bright, clear sound in the quiet alley. "What are you talking about? There's no husband. It's always been you, Henry. Only you." Henry froze, and after what felt like an eternity, his face lit up with wild joy.

Standing close enough to make her shift uncomfortably, I tilted my head and let my eyes sweep her from head to toe. “Those earrings? Cheap knock-offs. That purse you’re clutching like it’s priceless? A counterfeit. And that dress you’re flaunting? Thrift store special, not designer.” Color drained from her face, replaced with a flush of embarrassment. A man in suits near the end of the table stood abruptly. I recognised him, Luke. He calls himself Veronica's friend but he's more like her lap dog. “Enough. That bitch shouldn’t even be here, throwing insults at Veronica. She’s just a nobody.”

“Dude, you've been scanning the entrance since we arrived like you lost your dog." " I don't have a dog.” I grit out. I fucking hate dogs. “True. But you had a- “I'd advise you don't utter his name if you want to stay alive." He Snicker's. Fucking Snickers then throws his arm up in resignation. He's lucky I can't kill him. Yet. I elbow him in the ribs. Lightly if I might add. He still wheezes like I stabbed him. “I'm fine" I'm not.

Wanna see? The room erupted in laughter. “Out of context!” Malik protested. “Uh-huh,” Avery said. It escalated quickly. Someone dared Caleb to shotgun a beer and then call his ex. He did it without blinking. Damien got dared to text I miss you to the group’s old rival captain. Then came the first dirty one — Avery daring Damien to eat a cherry out of a shot glass using only his mouth. “You’re disgusting,” Damien said, but did it anyway, slow enough to make half the room howl.

I put my arm over my stomach as I continued to howl with laughter. “What did they do to you guys?” “WE GOT GLITTER BOMBED! WHERE ARE THEY?!” I touched my lip, still giggling. “You got a little something there.” Gerald wiped at his lips furiously while Beanie scowled at me. “They put super glue and lipstick in a chapstick tube. Now the fucking shit won’t come off!” I shook my head. “Sorry, boys. They went into the bathroom. I think I heard the window open.”

He spoke to me like he was talking to a little girl. I nodded, feeling my lower lip tremble. “You’re mean,” I pouted. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to the beach, and when I get back, I want to see my room normal again. We’re enemies here, I get it, but outside, it’ll be like we’re the best friends in the world.” I patted his shoulder. “I don’t see you as my enemy, Amanda. You see me as a threat because of everything with the trial, I know, but I’m just trying to do the right thing,” he said seriously.

I'd like to see you convince her that little ole me did something to you. "Patrick he's going to share your cage for a few days, you two have to get along." The hell I am. Neither one of us was too fond of that idea but I had the good sense to keep my thoughts to myself while he showed his ass. He came damn close to giving away my identity before I sent him a mental mind fuck that knocked him off his perch.
