Ember mumbled to herself, “But I fucking need him still.” Ember stopped in front of her apartment door and opened it with her key. Once she got inside, Ember removed her top shirt, leaving her in her sports bra. Ember went to the other side of her bed and opened the curtains. The street of Pinephil city isn’t that appealing to tourists at all. But the lights at this night hour would give justice and beauty to the city at least. “A sparkling façade of the gruesome life here.” Ember scoffed and softly closed the curtain. She went to her desk and opened her computer. She was about to take a seat when someone knocked on her door.

Leaving Erica's office, I felt agitated and on edge. I was used to controlling my emotions and my actions but at this moment I felt like I would explode. I had begun to pry open the safe that I kept locked in my mind and feelings were beginning to seep out while I desperately tried to push them back in. On my way home, I called my husband and told him that I needed a break, and asked if he could watch the children so that I could spend the night at the casino alone. Usually, you would have a good time staying at a casino, but I was more interested in the free room that they give you for gambling there in the past. I needed that free room right now. I do not want to put this burden on my fami

The acrid scent of the smoke still clung to Ava, a harsh reminder of the fire that took her parents. At eight, her world was a scary, gray place. A cruel twist of fate left her alone, an orphan in a world that didn't make sense anymore. A warm hand touched her shaking shoulder. Tears blurred her vision as she looked up at a strong man. He seemed so strong, unlike the weakness she felt. His kind face showed he understood. "Please don't... don't... Please don't kill me too," she whispered, her voice small and scared.

Ash chuckles, “It’s okay, we managed.” She nods, “Could I have the book to look at while we wait for Serena?” Kai nods and gets up to grab it. They had re-wrapped it in the silk scarf that Benny had given it to her in. She lets Kai unwrap it and place it on her lap. The book is clearly ancient, but the leather of the cover is in remarkable condition. But then it had been stored in a dragon’s hoard for years. The cover had an embossed phoenix on it, and a few gems in gold settings to highlight some details.

"Game's on, ladies. And I'm rewriting the board." The city bled neon beyond the windows, but inside, my pulse matched its throb—strategy laced with something darker, hungrier. Kenji confessed, Harlan bled, and I countered. But his eyes haunted, obsidian promises of ruin and claim. The deal struck. The hunt is true. And in that electric void, I felt it—power shifting, not surrender, but collision. Two storms, knees bent, circling for the kill.

She handed it to him wordlessly. “It’s encoded,” she said. “Buried inside one of Arion’s sermons. But here—this line: ‘Let the flame remember the forgotten names.’ That’s an anchor.” Xavier read aloud: “‘The Emberstone city lies beneath ash, where no vow holds, and no past returns unbroken.’” Ceres leaned forward. “That’s Vireloch. The buried city Lafar mentioned.” Maera nodded grimly. “The last place Arion hasn’t claimed.”

The night went still again. Ember stood there for a long moment,cold and shaking, feeling all the rises from her skin, she pressed her hand against the window glass. Recalling the words again “He’s not gone”. The words echoed in her head over and over until her pulse began to hit painfully against her ribs. When she finally lay herself down, she didn’t realize she was crying until she tasted salt from her middle lips. Darius’s POV

Rebecca's POV Ember broke. Not dramatically — not the way Charlotte broke, which was loudly and with an audience. The way Ember broke was quiet and sudden and worse for both of those things. One moment she was standing in the middle of the corridor being pulled in multiple directions by people asking questions she could not answer, and the next she was not there anymore. She moved fast.
