Civilian Wolves Novel Novels & Stories

Zeke’s jeep rumbles in front of Ethan's apartment building, headlights slicing through the night. It’s past eight, and the cool evening air brushes my skin as I step forward, backpack slung over one shoulder. My heart kicks harder than I’d like to admit, fueled by a terrifying mix of dread and reluctant curiosity. So I'm going into the world of wolves...wolves that have been wolves all their lives, not a human like me. What's it going to be like?

In a flash of an eye all three of them were dire wolves running through the woods, wild, free. Not for long, Pearl knew she needed to go back to the mortal realm and save Ethan. END OF BOOK 1

Before I could pull my rifle from my shoulder strap, the gray brush at the edge of the path exploded. A pack of five feral wolves scrambled up the scree. They were huge, their gray coats matted with frozen mud, their ribs showing prominently through their skin. These were not the controlled, intelligent hybrids under Vex’s command; these were wild, desperate predators driven mad by a long winter and empty bellies. The lead wolf lunged directly for the younger mule's throat. The animal shrieked, rearing back on its hind legs and twisting the lead line out of Sera's hands. The heavy supply crates shifted violently, the wood groaning against the leather straps.

Her heart warmed at the concern of a stranger who was willing to give up his last meal for her. Meanwhile on the East side a kilometer away, Ethan took aim with his bow frozen and his heart hammering between the dense gaps in the trees. On his way to trace the deer's scent, Ethan realized there was another animal smell, the young man had never expected at all. In front of him an emaciated deer clawed at a tree and a pair of wolf eyes watched him with eerie silence. Ethan often smelled wolves but this was the first time he had encountered one, even by accident. From this close, the wolf's odor was even sharper as its fangs protruded.

I couldn’t stay there and continue to face the disgrace of that day. My wolf is still weak. From time to time, he would groan within me, maybe to tell me he was still there or a sign of mourning. With every movement on the ground, my body still burned with pain. Whenever my body brushed against a tree or hit a rock, the pain would multiply. However, my will prompted me to continue to move on. If this will be my end, so be it. it was better than staying in the clan where no one cared anymore.

Rollo perked up, waiting for Jack’s answer. “No. Why?” Beta Jack was clearly confused. “On my run today, I ran along the creek. I came upon a wolf. I didn’t recognize the scent and I didn’t recognize the wolf’s eyes when I looked into them. The wolf was a red wolf. She was absolutely beautiful. Her scent was intoxicating. I felt so at peace when I was sitting with her.” I shook my head, realizing that I must sound completely sappy as I talk with Jack.

At five years old, Jeremy learned that lies shaped reality. It was the first night his father, or the man he would one day call his father, had brought him to Wolf Pack Run, the main Grey Wolf ranch, days after his mother’s death. That evening, around a campfire with the whole of the pack in attendance, James Lennon, then high commander of the Grey Wolf armies, had stood in the flickering orange glow of the flames and announced he had a son that he hadn’t known existed.

Wolf Nation Times pops up first on my screen of news outlets. ’MURDER AT THE CLAIMING DISRUPTS CELEBRATIONS’ ’ARIANA ERICKSON MATED TO ALPHA ARES MARTIN OF FREEDOM RIDGE PACK, DOES THIS MEAN WAR IN WOLF NATION?’ ’FORMER ALPHA LUCIAN CHEATS LOOPHOLE WITH SUICIDE’

Instead, it suddenly took a halt right in front of me and the sudden sound of bones violently cracking made my skin crawl. What the hell is happening? I didn’t even manage to finish the sentence in my head, because the sight in front of me got my mind freezing in shock. The silver huge wolf was no longer there, a flesh and bone human instantly taking his place. He just...shifted...l-like t-the creatures in m-my fantasy novels...I barely managed to form the sentence in my head as those same midnight blue eyes were staring once again right back into mine. He was standing right in front of me, fully naked, a trace of concern and sadness glinting in his eyes.

Three more wolves fall to the floor and the blast ripples through their declining numbers. They will not give up. Until the last one takes their final breath they will chase us, intent on spilling our blood. Celeste fires off three more marbles in quick succession but the wolves are ready this time and jump out of their way before they are caught in the explosion. ‘They are all gone.’ Celeste shouts in my head. The glimmer of hope that had started to build inside me is crushed and I know we are not going to live through the night. One wolf slams hard into the side of the truck and buckles my door inwards and send the truck careening across multiple lanes. Shit. I mange to steady us and pull
