It was a memory.
“I saw something...” Joyce started hesitantly, her fingers gripping the bottle a little tighter. “Or rather, I remembered something.”
James waited, his sharp eyes studying her face.
“It was when I was in grade two,” she continued slowly, glancing up at him. “It was the end of the school day, and parents were coming to pick up their kids. I saw a man—a classmate’s nanny, actually—and I just... froze. I don’t know why. But something about her terrified me. I started crying and... I peed my pants.” She exhaled shakily, pressing her lips together in embarrassment before adding, “My mom carried me home.”
