Dane commanded. Dash complained as he stood up, then quickly left. Dane turned to face me, and I was trembling as if I had been in a freezer all day. “Are you okay?” he asked as he walked toward me. I flinched at the sight of his hand reaching out to touch me, but he quickly pulled it back. “Clean up and be in the chambers in twenty minutes,” he instructed, before turning to leave. Before he could go, I finally found my voice and spoke.

I groan internally. My name is Mariah Cruz. I'm 17 years old and starting my junior year today. My Father, Mark Cruz, is the current Beta of our pack, The Royal Moon Pack, and my mother, Jennifer Diaz, is the Beta female. My Brother Josh Cruz is 18 years old and a senior in High School. He is training to become the next Beta when our Alpha, Jason Adams, decides to retire and hand the title to his eldest son, Nick Adams. Nick is 18 and is also a senior in high school. He didn’t speak much, but his presence alone was enough to make anyone think twice before getting too close. Damien told me Cedric was his fifth commander. Whatever that meant in this clan hierarchy, one thing was clear, he was loyal to Mrs. Clara too.

Across the chamber, one of the elders cleared his throat. “…if we reassign Gamma Reid’s men to the southern ridge, Alpha?” I looked up slowly. Three pairs of eyes were fixed on me, councilmen, warriors, one of the elders who rarely spoke unless it was life or death. All of them were waiting for an answer I hadn’t heard. A decision I hadn’t made. How long had I been zoning out? I clenched my jaw until it clicked. “Reassign them,” I said flatly, rising to my feet.

“That’s… generous, Mr. D’Amaris. I’ll have my team review the proposal. We should be getting back to you about it within the week.” “Of course,” he said easily, standing. “Take all the time you need. I, personally, am not in a rush…” When he reached across the desk to shake my hand, I hesitated for half a second before taking it. His grip was firm, confident, too confident. It was almost as if he was proving a point, though to who, that was a question that I didn’t have the answer to. “I look forward to working with you,” he said, holding my gaze as his thumb brushed against my hand before he let go. “I believe that we are going to make a good team together.
