Karsyn Floored is an understatement, I never expected Tucker to give me a key to his house. Parking in his driveway, I feel a warmth in my heart I haven't felt in a long time. I'm trying to temper my expectations, but it's hard when Tucker keeps blowing them out of the water. My cell buzzes in the cup holder. Reaching over, I grab it out, smiling as I see a message from the man on my mind. T: The code to turn the alarm off is 6701.

It was from the old one. I pulled up the decommissioned codes list and started cross-referencing. Most of them had been wiped when we upgraded, deleted from the system entirely because there was no point keeping old access codes around when they didn't work anymore. But a few had been left in the database, overlooked or forgotten or maybe kept on purpose by someone who knew they might be useful someday. The code used on the wedding night was one of those forgotten ones. Decommissioned two years ago but still technically functional if you knew where to look and how to activate it.

“Stay quiet.” The command is soft. Quiet. I feel my mouth slowly start to close as he moves. I turn my head, noticing we’re walking into a penthouse. We pass the first floor, the entire space not bearing the smallest semblance of life. When we get to the elevator, he says, “Put in the code,” I look at him. “What code?” His eyes look at me like he’s still not seeing me. “Our wedding date. 0-6-2-1,”

The result came out quickly. The two sets of code were completely different.

The love. Knock. Knock. The sharp rap on the door shattered the bubble. Jordan’s face hardened instantly. "I told Paul no interruptions." "Sir," Paul’s voice came through the heavy wood, sounding strained. "It’s Mr. Stone. He’s on the secure line. He says it’s a Code Black." Jordan froze. The hand on my leg went rigid. "Code Black?" I whispered. "What does that mean?" "It means catastrophic failure," Jordan said grimly. He set his coffee down on the nightstand. The peaceful lover vanished, the ruthless CEO returned. "Get dressed, Bridgett. Stay here."

“I’m fine. Can we head over to the basement now? Apparently, we have actual work to do.” We step into the garage. Sandy keeps chattering about finding a new space, but I tune her out, as usual. My phone buzzes in my pocket, and I pull it out automatically. A new text. From Cameron. I drop everything on the table before even reading it. Cameron: Soy, this is Code Grey. I repeat, Code Grey! I blink at the screen, heart thudding. We have codes for everything. Instead of the usual Code Red for danger, we use Code Grey.

"The mother-code wrapper has a twelve-digit variance." "Thirteen digits," I corrected softly, reaching past his arm to tap a rapid sequence into the terminal. "The thirteenth is an independent variable based on the daily coordinate shift of the Maldives transport. Watch the line." The moment my fingers left the keys, the amber text on the monitor flashed a clean, brilliant emerald green. The data throughput instantly surged, the cooling fans in the processor towers behind us letting out a synchronized, high-pitched whir as the bottleneck dissolved.

I sent a silent note of prayer that it went well. Nikki Cornelius and my laughter got cut off by a slight banging on the door. I swallowed while he stood to his feet warily. “Did you order something?” I glanced at my cellphone and saw that it was after eleven p.m. He shook his head and shrugged. He put an index finger over his lips to shush me as if I was going to make any noise in the first place. Whoever was at the door was gentle with knocking and was definitely not in a haste to leave.

She had to have come through the portal. “Okay!” Dax startled me back to reality, and I opened my eyes, turning to see him flying up behind me. “It was really hard to understand her, but I think she said the code is 10290315.” I grabbed a pencil and a Post-It note to write it down before we forgot what he’d just said. As soon as I had it on the paper, I turned and punched it into the computer. “Access denied. Dang it!” I slammed my hand down on Lena’s desk, frustrated nothing seemed to be working.
