“After the thaw begins but before the passes open fully. Fewer travelers. Fewer eyes. Fewer chances for accidents.” August had exhaled, relief and wariness mingling in the breath. He had expected resistance, delay, perhaps even refusal. Instead Winter had given him a date. A frame. It’s my way of ensuring they can’t be used while my wolves finish the fight. Then I see him—Augustine—cocking his gun and pointing it directly at me. A cruel, dark smile creeps across my lips.
