He’s a friend,” Soren said proudly. “He’s our ride.” Before I could decide if I was hallucinating, he was lifting me onto the creature’s surprisingly comfortable, leathery back. Obsidian shifted, muscles rolling beneath us, and then—with a single, mighty push of his wings—we were airborne.

I couldn’t say that I blamed him, it was hard to bow to someone like her. I’d heard rumors that Marcus Blackwell and his half dragon mate had been the one to take down the old dragon. I didn’t know if that was true, but it would make it hard for any of us to accept the newest Elder.
