Kael bristled, but stopped, though his eyes never left me.
“Try again,” Lucious urged. “Feel it, don’t push it away. Fire wants to be seen. If you smother it, it will explode.”
I let the warmth rise, the spark growing until it licked against my palm, a small flame glowing like a heartbeat outside my body. It flickered, wild, feeding on my uneven breaths.
“That’s it,” Lucious said quietly. “Now command it.”
The flame flared at his words, as if mocking me. Sweat broke across my brow. “It doesn’t want to listen,” I said through clenched teeth.
