“Mel … Mel, are you awake? Mel!”
A pause. A soft groan. “Mm … Kiara? My head hurts.”
My chest tightens. She sounds small. Fragile. Alive. Thank God. She’s okay.
“Kiara … what happened to the clowns?”
“What?” Kiara’s voice is slurred, confused. “This is not the circus.”
Well, sometimes it feels like one.
“But I saw clowns and worms.”
“Hell, I only saw frickin’ cats everywhere. It’s because you’re always riffing about growing old as a virgin cat lady. I swear I need to get you laid, cause those cats are haunting me, girl.”
