My voice did not shake. The man tilted his head. He didn't have a face, just a shifting darkness where his features should be. "You can call me the Reader," he said. His voice sounded like paper rubbing together. "I am the one who pays for the ink. I am the one who decides if your story ends here or keeps going." Bryan stepped in front of me, his hand on his pistol. "He’s another code, Hazel. Don’t listen to him." The Reader laughed. It was a dry, thin sound. "A copy thinks he has a choice. How cute."

The gray-coated man quietly whispered, "It remembers you." Adrian stopped. "I've never seen this book." The stranger looked into his eyes. "No." "But it has seen you." A low hum filled the island. The first page slowly turned by itself. The second page... was completely blank. Not a single word. Not a single mark. Only a tiny sentence appeared at the bottom. Place your hand here. The First Reader immediately raised his voice. "Don't." "If the book accepts you..." "...there will be no turning back."

"Admit what?" ‘That you can't concentrate.’ "I'm concentrating." ‘You've read that paragraph five times.’ "It's a complex paragraph." ‘It's a list of coordinates.’ I close the file, and lean back in the chair and look at the ceiling and I think, with the portion of my brain that is still operating professionally, about the hunter cell and the intelligence leak and the three underlined names. Author’s Note Hello, dear readers, I want to apologize to all of you who have reached this point and are reading without fully understanding what’s happening. After spending time rereading the book, I realized there were many repeated pieces of information and that the story wasn’t moving forward—it kept circling the same situations.

Then— “I don’t know how to read you anymore.” His chest tightened slightly. “Is that a bad thing?” “I don’t know yet.” --- Silence settled again. But this time— It wasn’t heavy. It was… exploratory.

UNTIL NOW I still remember everything Marcus told me on the last day. Because of what he said, I was confused. I thought and asked all I had heard that I didn’t know what the right answer was. Even if I insist that maybe Marcus just said that to deceive me, there's a part of my mind that doesn't accept that. There’s still the confusion that I can’t get rid of. It’s like how much I still don’t know that I need to know about vampires, even the wolves.
