The sun shone brightly, casting a soft glow on Cora's cheek as the redhead breathed softly and evenly. If one were to look around the room, one would see wall-to-wall bookshelves filled with hundreds of books that she had read. On her door and on the ceiling were posters of cats, dogs, flowers, and even some bands. Her comforter/duvet was wrapped around her and she lay on two fluffy pillows and was surrounded by a dozen more. All of the throw pillows and the comforter were yellow and had sunflower patterns on them.

The book felt ancient, alive even, as if it held secrets waiting to be unlocked, secrets she was only beginning to understand. When she opened it, the parchment pages were thick and heavy beneath her fingers, each one covered in swirling lines and strange, ancient runes that seemed to pulse with a faint glow. The illustrations on the pages were mesmerizing, showing beings encircled by the elements - fire, water, earth, and air - all woven in both harmony and chaos. One page depicted a figure standing amidst a storm, lightning sparking from their fingertips as torrents of rain whipped around them. “It’s like… they’re calling to me,” Zoe murmured, her voice barely a whisper as she took in the

Almost as though the book held secrets that felt almost wrong of me to try to divulge. But I opened it anyway. This wasn't like the other journal. This one had no name. Just endless pages and pages of sketches. The first none was a crown of coral and bone, with blood being tipped over it from a golden goblet. I supposed this particular one was a symbol of his ascension that never got to happen. There was another of a sea serpent being curled around a skull, with a phrase written below it. "He waits in the deep." I murmured. I shook my head and turned to another mage.

Zane and I tucked the girls in not longer after that, and I read from what was now officially the girls’ second-favorite book. With a smile, I opened the book, admiring the illustrations Grace and Chloe had already seen and cooed over. “Far out in the ocean, where the water is as blue as the prettiest cornflower and as clear as crystal, it is very, very deep; so deep, indeed, that no cable could sound it, and many church steeples, piled one upon another, would not reach from the ground beneath to the surface of the water above. There dwell the Sea King and his subjects.

Crystals, embedded within intricate chandeliers, scattered and refracted the light, creating mesmerizing patterns that shimmered across the vast expanse of the library. The shelves, extending from the floor to the ceiling, were adorned with vibrant corals and seashells, lending an organic touch to the grandeur of the space. The sound of water gently lapping against the shelves provided a soothing ambiance, creating a serene atmosphere that encouraged deep contemplation and study.

“The issue is that it’s not currently curable. We’re raising money for more research into the matter.” That sounded reasonable... maybe. She softens a bit and smiles. I hear Delphnie whispering her chant below her mask. I just need to hold her here for a few more seconds, then I can use the spray bottle. “Let me go get my purse,” Coraline says. I open my mouth to say something to stop her, but she has already disappeared into the house. “I lost it,” Delphnie whispers. “Keep her talking when she gets back.” I nod, finding it harder to keep the fake smile on my face the longer we stand here. But I manage it when she reappears with a checkbook.

I flip the book again, it’s the same woman. The other page is a drawing of a castle, which somehow looks like a pack-house, then there’s just a scribbling of what doesn’t make any sense. And when I flip again, it’s a woman with ginger curls that reaches my neck alongside green eyes, with freckles lining up her nose. Uh...weird, that looks like me.

“Do try not to kill each other.” The moment she disappears into the house, I exhale, pressing two fingers to my temple. Coraline breaks the silence first. “You know,” she says, swirling her tea, “you have the worst resting face I’ve ever seen.” I stare at her. “Is that supposed to be an observation or an insult?” “Both,” she says with a shrug. I’m expecting irritation. Instead, something like amusement touches my lips. Barely. She raises an eyebrow. “Was that a smile? Dear God, someone call the press.”

She has to find him no matter what! Flora started walking in the long corridor, discovering the department. It was vast with many rooms and no windows. It was dark with some yellow lamps on the walls that had a faint light. The corridor had very high sailing. Maybe five meters? Flora was not sure, for she wasn't able to see the sailing. It was too dark to be seen. The wall was full of paintings. But they were not any paintings. They were the gloomiest paintings Flora has ever seen. There were some good imitations of 'Massacre of the innocents, 'The Temptation of St. Anthony', 'The Nightmare', 'Hell', 'Saturn Devouring His Son', 'Diomedes Devoured by Horses', 'Smiling Spider' and 'The garden
