Instead, she looked at me and asked, “May I—?” I paused before answering, “Yes.” Only then did Corrine pick up one of the books—the largest of the three—and carefully open it. On the very first page, we saw elegant, looping handwriting, as though written with great care.

The illustration looked like a horrible, drooling, sharp-toothed, yellow-eyed demon, with gray skin, a thick matted beard, and towered over the scribbled trees.

“It’s been driving me crazy since the day I arrived. And then just now, looking at it in the light… Just read it.” Curious, I bent over the book and skimmed the story. The initial illustration took up half the page, inked in faded black and red: a young woman at a vanity, combing her hair with a crescent pendant hanging at her throat. Behind her, half-hidden in the curtains, stood a hooded figure with long fingers and a smile full of jagged teeth. The crescent in the drawing was mine. Not similar. Mine, down to the slight asymmetry of the points.

It stands alone, in the middle of the woods, surrounded by trees like a sacred temple. “There it is!" Coral whisper–yells, almost jumping with joy. I smile as well, but I still can't shake off the wary feeling. We walk up to the library and stop when we get to its huge black doors. I reach out to open it. " Wait!” Coral says, stopping me before I can even get hold of the door handle. " Something's wrong.” She presses her hand to her temple and shuts her eyes. " Are you okay?” " Yes but…" she trails off her expression wary. “I don't feel good. I feel odd, like there's something that doesn't want us to go in.”
