Apparently they all know each other already as they chat idly while Everett and I try to wrap our minds around this plot twist. "Well, what do you think?" I ask him and he shrugs, leafing through the book. "I don't know. Maybe they're right. It couldn't hurt to read the book, right?" He asks. I run an exasperated hand down my face, shaking my head as I look down at the book. "Yeah. It couldn't hurt... and maybe they could give you some tips you can use on Harper." I say with a shit eating grin that has Everett blushing again.

“Rune reactivation observed in third quadrant during recent storm. Corruption risk — extreme. Recommend item be secured in the vault permanently.” I stared at it. Corruption? Was that why Tori took it — to mess with me? Or had she been manipulated, too? There were too many threads. Too many moving pieces. Ugh. Goddess. This was so not how I thought being here was going to be like. I closed the book slowly. It is what it is. And then I heard it — a footstep. Sharp. Near the west stacks. I ducked instinctively, heart in my throat. Someone was here.

He stared down at it, then at me, shock flickering across his features before the fight dragged his focus back to the next threat. “NEW FUNCTION DETECTED,” the librarian snarled, voice crackling. “CORRUPTED AUTHOR. ILLEGAL EDIT.” A volley of books arced toward us. I didn’t have time to parse titles. Burn, I thought, flinging the idea like a shield. Flame licked the edges of a chunk of them mid‑flight.

His jaw tightened, and I could see the tension in his shoulders as he took a step back, putting distance between himself and the book. “It’s not supposed to be here,” he said finally, his voice grim. “This is a book of old magic—ancient, dangerous magic that hasn’t been used in centuries. It should have been destroyed long ago.” A chill ran down my spine. “Destroyed? Why?” “Because the magic in this book is forbidden. It’s dark, corruptive. Anyone who tries to use it risks losing themselves, their mind, their soul.” He met my gaze, his eyes filled with a warning. “You should have never touched it.”

Don't look at me, blame mills and boon. I picked up one book with a superb and sexy looking cover titled; Bound by honour by Cora Reiley. She's one of my favourite writers and I only have a few. She write so well and her smuts are over the moon. I head back to the sitting room and returned to my former position before flipping the book open. Just as I was about flipping to the next page, a loud noise erupted my peace. I sat up quickly and listened for a few seconds, forcing my panick at the back of my mind.

Believe it or not.” Her lips parted, her breath hitching, but she stepped back, her necklace pulsing. “Show me, then,” she said, voice firm, though her eyes lingered on mine, sparking heat. “No games.” I nodded, pulling a leather-bound tome from the shelf, dust puffing into the air. My fingers brushed hers as I handed it over, the touch sending a jolt through me. Her eyes widened, but she snatched the book, flipping it open. “Moonstone records,” I said, leaning over her shoulder, my voice low, intimate. “They talk about corruption. Alphas who weren’t attuned to a moonstone lose control, and go mad.”
