The cold wind from the mountain moves in across my skin and bites down at me, causing me to shiver despite wolves never really feeling the cold. My heart pounding, my nerves taut and my head in chaos as I stand on the boundary and stare into the darkness awaiting the sun to start to show hints of rising. The eerie silence despite rows and rows of assembled wolves unnerves me and Leyanne and Meadow to my right, Carmen and Sierra to my left, stand solidly still, waiting, we’re all just waiting.

Her body shivered uncontrollably, her eyes broadened— and finally, not another gasp escaped from her. A shiver ran down my spine, freezing my entire operating system. But before my brain could process everything, a gunshot shattered the air. The dark wolf slammed on the ground, blood gushing from the wound like flowing water. “Holy shit.” My jaw hung open, the hairs along my arms stood on the edge while clutching on my chest. “What the…” My knees were trembling, almost losing my balance and I had to lean my back against Kian's chest. He tightened his anchor around my waist, while his thumb brushed against my icy cold wrist.

It was a large coyote, moving slowly closer to the little puppy. “Terrence!” she shouted, her voice urgent, as the coyote got no more than thirty or forty feet from tiny Shep. “I see him,” Terrence called back, his eyes fixed on the predator. He bent down and dug under the snow, grabbing some rocks and sticks and throwing them carefully at the hungry coyote. The animal yelped when a small rock hit it, but it didn’t run like a coyote usually would when scared by a human. Terrence cursed at it, yelled, and kept throwing anything he could find at the stalking predator, but the coyote just let out a low, feral growl.
