***** KYLA POV Back at the center The Crimson General had crossed the battlefield like he owned it. He stepped through the rivers of his own dead without flinching, boots stained with blood, shoulders squared beneath ancient crimson plate that pulsed with demonic runes. With every swing of his cursed blade, three of my warriors fell—sliced clean, like they were nothing more than tall grass before the scythe. The storm screamed overhead, lightning catching the jagged edges of his horned helm as if even the sky was afraid to strike him. And then—he stopped. Only ten paces from me.

I turned to see Crimson croak “I…” “Crimson, whatever you have to say can wait. Right now, your fighters need you.” I pulled my arm from his grasp abruptly. I had no time for excuses, and he had no time for explanations. I didn’t care if he felt shitty, that was not my concern, nor was it my problem. He had made that quite clear, with his hot and cold attitude toward me. I won't play his game. I don't play games. I turned back towards the fight, and one of the warriors handed me a blade, a short sword. Similar to the one Lamia and Hunji trained me with. I smirked, now we were talking. I took off behind other fighters, in search of my grandfather.

Rain started feeling a familiar nightmarish tickle under her gut. Luna's fingers also twitched a little when she glanced from the corner. A silver blade with a pitch black hilt manifested inside his grip. A thick black chain also wrapped his wrist. Creed's eyes flashed an orange glint. The fabric of space seemed to be caving around the blade's edge that oozed out a thick black misama invisible to naked eyes. "Thanks!" Creed uttered and extended his arm toward him, "Anway! Here… Take this…" "Excuse me?"

Cronin's POV It has been many years since anyone has called me by my given name. I had to become Blue Blade to separate myself from the reality of what my life had become, it was the only way I could survive what had to be done. The weapon I carry was a gift from the king before he stole the throne from his own brother. It is imbued with powers I do not understand and bound to me with a dark magic that I find both awe inspiring and terrifying.

And Crimson was bleeding before the first battle even began. ....

His gaze panned the far wall and he almost laughed out loud when he spotted the sword. Three years ago Vertigo comics had done an adaption of his zombie novel, Dead on the Inside, and as part of the promotion, Brad had attended Dragoncon in Atlanta, Georgia. He’d received many gifts while there—graphic novels, posters, T-shirts, trading cards, and from one publisher of Manga a katana sword with sheath and wall mount. He’d hung it up, thinking of it as a mere decoration and nothing more, but now felt silly that it hadn’t immediately sprung to mind when in need of a weapon. He crossed the room, snatched the sword from the mount, and removed it from its sheath.

Beautiful, I thought, my eyes roving over the thin slender body, its fine edge, to the gems attached at the hilt of the both of them; one blue, the other red. These are mine, I felt with absolute confidence, reaching out to grasp both swords. A connection developed between I and the two swords as I pulled them off the rack in my hands, magic ran up my body easing off my fatigue. I nearly didn’t notice the faint tingle on my both palm where a tiny stinging stung me and tiny drops of blood dripped unto the sword, cementing our connection—the cut healing a mini-second later.
