"Since we are visiting another horde without sending a messenger ahead, I need to bring something that will serve as a gift. Those of the Horde of Fates are known knowledge seekers. I have many books in my private collection that have not been seen since The Fires. They should serve as a suitable present," I say.

DRAVEN A dramatic sigh echoed behind me. "Oh, come on!" The voiced whined from the shadows near the bookshelves. “I have spent weeks improving my lightness skill,” Ariel said. "Weeks, Draven. Do you know how difficult it is sneaking around a palace filled with paranoid creatures?” I heard his footsteps as he walked further into the study. "I didn't make a single sound! How do you always do that? You truly wound my confidence.” Ignoring my silence as usual, Ariel strolled across the room with a carefree stride that belonged anywhere but a war fortress. He threw himself into one of the leather chairs across my desk, and placed his boots up on the edge of the wood.

I press my lips into a thin line and move on. The third grimoire is thicker, darker, filled with the more obscure records I’ve gathered over time, rituals and warnings, fragments of older traditions. My pulse picks up slightly as I flip through it, hoping to stumble across some half-lost truth. I even find references to cursed wolves and blood-bound shapeshifters, but still… no mention of that name. No mention of those red eyes. I lean back, exhaling hard. Just as I’m about to give up, my eyes land on a fourth book, small, unassuming, bound in dull gray hide. One I almost never open. It’s handwritten and filled with anecdotal entries from witches who lived long before my time.

Zeke approached silently, his muscular frame moving like a predator, and wrapped his arms around Damien from behind, pulling him into a firm embrace. "Couldn't sleep, huh?" Zeke whispered, his voice a low rumble against Damien's ear.

The wind howled through Boneburn Forest, carrying the acrid scent of burned wood. Lia crouched low among the twisted trees, her wolf ears flat against her skull, her senses straining for any sign of movement. Her sharp golden eyes scanned the underbrush, the faint rustling of leaves barely audible over the distant crackling of flames. A human hunting trap lay ahead, its iron teeth glinting in the dim light of the waning sun. "Greyskin," she muttered to herself, a bitter edge to the word.
