The word curse reverberated within me, clenching my soul tightly.
One of the elders stepped forward, staff tapping against stone. “The curse upon your line has already claimed generations. It is no small matter.”
“No,” Lucien agreed, and his voice shifted then— to an aching truth. “It is not.”
Through the bond, images began to surface, unbidden and fragmented.
I saw a young Lucien, not yet hardened by rule, standing beside a boy who looked identical to him, laughter unburdened by fate.
I saw the same boy lying pale and lifeless upon bloodstained stone, a dark mark crawling across his veins like ink spreading through water. Beside him, lay a woman, with the same fate.
