The heavy Dreadnought-Crawler, driven by my father, tore across the vitrified glass of the crater in a massive, sweeping circle. Every half-mile, the heavy cargo doors hissed open, and a Code-Born teenager dropped to the ground, standing their ground in the shadow of the falling apocalypse. "Leo!" I yelled into the comms. "Do you hear me?" "I hear you, Mia!" the teenager’s voice came back, shaky but fierce.

A huge truck came out of nowhere from his left forcing him to stop the car abruptly making a screeching noise as he held out his arm to keep his mom safe from hitting the dashboard. As soon as the car stopped he realized that he got hurt as blood dripped down his forehead. "Are you alright, mom?" Hunter asked, looking at Emma making sure she wasn't injured. Her eyes were wide as she gave a nod. Hunter glanced at the truck and his eyes narrowed at the driver who got out of the car. That driver's eyes turned golden and Hunter knew he was about to shift. In the blink of an eye, he yanked the gun from under his seat and aimed at that shifting werewolf.

The trek out of the Maine "Wellness Zone" was a descent into a surreal, quiet nightmare. As Julian, Leo, and Clara moved through the shadows of the suburbs, they saw a world cured of its jagged edges. There were no sirens, no shouting matches, no broken windows. The streetlights dimmed and brightened in perfect synchronicity with the footfalls of the few citizens out for evening walks.
