Pure Pleasures (A Collection of short Stories)

Pure Pleasures (A Collection of short Stories)

“Campus security gets nosy after ten.” Mia shut it softly. The office smelled like old books, coffee, and faint whiskey. Stacks of papers and first editions covered every surface. A single lamp cast warm light across the desk. “You wanted to go over the D.H. Lawrence chapter,” she said, setting her bag down. Hale finally looked at her. His eyes lingered a second too long on the way her sweater hugged her chest before returning to her face. “Your analysis is sharp. But you’re romanticizing the power exchange. Sit.”

I left Aaron for the meantime on the part where the fountain pens are to go to the novel section. Since I saw Sophie Lark's Brutal Prince on TikTok's recommendation, people who have read this say that it has a strong female lead. I enjoy books of that genre, therefore I may be interested in reading it. I looked at the shelves. I also picked up a book and read the synopsis on the back when Aaron came to me here. "You like reading books?" he asked. I turned my eyes on him, "Uh, sometimes. If I'm interested in the plot," I answered.

The Lawless Heart.

The Lawless Heart.

she says and I felt my heart melt. "How sweet of you Alice," I say kicking her out of my office so I could do some work, I wasn't doing my best work, I was trying my best to focus, to read all the files that I had on hand, but I kept thinking back to Mr Morningstar, is he really part of the mafia? What if I end up being a mafia lawyer, I know those are paid generously but they don't have the best reputation out there. I ordered lunch at my office and ate there while working, Thalia dropped by my office again, dropping some papers and then left with a tight smile on her face, pretending that it didn't bother me having to do extra paperwork.

The Law And The Liar

And beneath it, I wrote three words: Find the truth. I spent the next year in libraries and courtrooms.I read everything. Criminal codes. Detective novels. Forensic science. Old news clippings. I started attending open hearings downtown — mostly petty theft and drug cases. But sometimes… sometimes I saw something useful. And then one day, I saw him. Raffaele Moretti.

Turning the music off, I grab the lavender and put it in a tiny glass vase, and set it in the center of the long ebony black dining table. Walking out of the conjoined dining room and kitchen I grab my book, my water bottle, and a blanket. I set the water and blanket by the back door that leads to the porch, and the beach a little off, and head back to the kitchen with my book. Of human bondage, by W. Somerset Maugham. The book itself isn't bad, but from my point of view, it's terribly bland. I like more poetic works. But also a hint of darkness. The best example is the poem, In the Desert, by Stephen Crane, from his book The Black Riders and Other Lines. It has a sense of dystopia that I ca

The League of Rogues

Zehra turned the last page of the novel she'd found in Lawrence's bedchamber earlier that day. It had been so wonderful to find an engaging read. She had read some English novels before, but never these "Gothic" ones, as Lawrence had called them, for they were rare in Shiraz, the area where she was from. The adventures of Lady Isabelle had distracted her from her loneliness for a time, but when she heard the click of the door opening her heart leapt.

Maisie scrutinized the manuscripts before looking up at Daniel in shock. "This novel is called Dancing Lights!" she exclaimed. "And the novel Delilah is currently serializing is called Whirling Lights! Even the names are so similar... "The outlines and character settings are even more alike!" She flipped through the pages. "There are plot variations, but it's clear that Dancing Lights has a more logical storyline! That makes sense... I always felt something was off when I read Whirling Lights. Now, this mystery is solved!"

I've only read two books on this app. This is the second and by far the best one. The storylines are fluid, the characters are endowed with personality and most importantly the writer makes them come together seamlessly. Ideally, this is what the experience should be, uncomplicated and enjoyable.

I like the story. However, the cost is high for books on here and they are never ending. Not that the chapters are long, but it is almost the same outlying as the other books from this author. Sometimes it takes a moment to see what characters they have actively engaged in that chapter.

Looking for those, you're in for a treat with his more controversial later works. I keep returning to 'The Rainbow' and 'Women in Love'. They're siblings, but the feel is different. The first one spends so much time with the Brangwen family on their farm, the soil and seasons almost becoming another character influencing their passions. It's less about dramatic plot and more about the pulse of life through generations.

'Women in Love' gets more intellectual and fraught in relationships, but nature is still the backdrop that intensifies everything—the snowy Alps, the watery millpond. Those landscapes don't just set the scene; they mirror the raw, often destructive emotions between the characters. Lawrence had a thing for using environments to show what people couldn't say.

Honestly, 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' fits this too, obviously. The woods and the gamekeeper's hut versus the sterile mansion. It's his most famous argument for nature and instinct over industrial, cerebral life. After reading it, I started noticing how disconnected I felt from simple things like weather.
