“Surprise me.” Flora smiled mischievously. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” The microwave gave a ping and Damien disappeared into the kitchen. He emerged with a bowl of sweet-smelling popcorn. He settled back onto the sofa, this time with the popcorn nestled between them on the coffee table. Flora flipped through more movies, stopping on a horror movie. “This looks interesting,” she said, handing Damien the remote to reach for the bowls of chips. He scanned the synopsis. “A demonic possession caused by a workplace hex? Sounds cheesy.”

A helicopter buzzed overhead, the searchlight crawling over the creek bed, and off in the distance, Halley could hear hounds as dozens of flashlights searched for Halley. “Miss Monroe, we’re going to have to take you down to the sheriff’s station to get a report, but you’re not in any trouble. I have the evidence and enough witness statements to let me know what this Halley Night girl was up to. I don’t understand what would make a girl….” He stopped himself. “At any rate, your dad can come with you, and we’ll get this over as soon as we can, okay?”

Damian could see the flecks of gold in his dark irises, the small scar on his chin from a fight two seasons ago, the way his chest rose and fell like he was running a marathon standing still. I don't want to kill anyone tonight. Well, Cielo Ricci maybe. I look out the window at the dark water of the Atlantic below. The moonlight is all but gone now with the clouds that rolled in carrying snow, but I get glimpses of black water now and again. This was my mom's favorite drive. She'd have me bring her here every weekend toward the end. I'd bundle her up under so many blankets you could hardly see her and drive, and she'd just watch the views and smile. Smile like the world hadn't dealt her yet another shitty card. Smile like she wasn't dying.

His thumb brushed the silver vine under her jaw. “Then don’t. Not yet. Power without choice is just another cage.” His words grounded her. The room stopped shaking. But the monster behind them was done recovering. It lunged. Damian shoved Luna aside and took the hit. Claws raked across his chest, opening four deep wounds. He went down hard. “Damian!” Luna screamed. The queen voice was gone. Just Luna. Terrified girl.

He nodded. “Looking for something.” “Answers?” “Or stories where the monster wins.” She turned to him. “You think you’re the monster?” “I know I am.” Silence. Then softly—“Monsters don’t make pasta and build libraries.” Damien’s lips twitched. “They do… when they want to keep their prey comfortable.”

The rhythmic motion of Damien’s hand beneath the desk matched the steady moans coming from his computer speakers. He leaned back in his leather chair, eyes locked on the screen in front of him. Lux Monroe. She was on all fours, a man behind her, gripping her hair, thrusting deep and hard. “Fuck,” Damien moaned, stroking himself faster. Her body was perfection—curves that could drive a man insane, eyes that begged and defied all at once. He’d been watching her videos for years—hell, he knew the exact moment new ones dropped. And this one? It was the most recent.
