"The defendant, Caleb Blake, after a violent conflict with the victim, Robert Stone, over the defendant's unauthorized installation of surveillance equipment, drove into the victim and caused Robert Stone's death." The victorious smile on Vivian's face froze. Robert Stone was her father's name. She shot to her feet and interrupted the judge.

He looked at her then — that piercing gaze that seemed to see through everything. “I’m saying you need to start asking the right questions,” he said quietly. “Because both sides, his and theirs — will burn everything to win.” She shook her head, confusion and fear clouding together. “What sides?” But before he could answer, a loud bang hit the door. Once. Twice. Then a voice, deep, cold, unmistakable — cut through the silence. “Open the door, Amara.” Her entire body went still. Dante. Cole cursed under his breath, turning toward the window.

The mahogany panels gleamed under the chandeliers, their intricate designs reflecting the heavy weight of the day’s proceedings. The scent of old leather mingled with the sharp tang of fresh ink as the atmosphere in the room grew more solemn with each passing moment. Reporters sat in reserved rows, their pens poised like weapons ready to capture every word. Camera crews stood behind the glass barriers, their lenses focused intently on the woman who now sat in the defendant’s chair: Cressida Vale.

The judge’s bench was made of two raised platforms, and the jury box was sectioned off in a way that reminded me most unpleasantly of the stage on which the humans had held up those items to be auctioned.

The courtroom suddenly felt too small and almost suffocating. I swallowed hard. “Proceed, Mr. Eden,” the judge instructed. Nolan’s lawyer adjusted his jacket before stepping forward again. “Thank you, Your Honor.” He said, his voice remained calm. “As I stated earlier, we have acquired substantial evidence proving that Miss Ronita Caleb was deliberately framed.” He opened the thick folder he had placed before the court. “We also have evidence identifying the individual responsible.” The entire courtroom seemed to hold its breath. Even the reporters seated at the back leaned forward.

“The woman is too green and I bet she’s just panicking. I’m going to fire her ass when this is over.” “I’ve got the East Street camera on line,” a man called out. “Screen fourteen.” Darren Artino pointed to the right screen and knew Justice breathing down his neck. Both men focused their attention on the screen. They watched a truck accelerate toward the front entrance of the women’s dorm. “Son of a bitch,” Darren spat. “What are Hail Mary doors?” Justice grabbed Darren by the arm and spun him around.

Liberty’s bouncing knee stills. Rowan’s hand touches Liberty’s elbow, small, grounding pressure, then releases. Dawson leans closer to me, voice low enough that it feels like he’s speaking directly into my blood. “Breathe.” I do. Then, we step into the room. Courtrooms have a particular cruelty: they make trauma orderly. We sit at a table facing the bench, our folders stacked like bricks. The judge sits above us, robed and distant, and a person turns into a symbol by fabric and height.

Chairs scraped against the floor and phones lit up the darkness. Lennon reached for Damien. "What's happening?" "I don't know." The emergency lights flickered on, the room was lit with a dim orange glow.

“Stay calm.” “I am. I am. Just got a bit nauseous.” “We heard what happened to her?” His mother spoke after a beat of silence. “Such a terrible incident to such a young woman. Where was she shot?” Everyone anxiously looked at Kali, but her eyes were turned to the right of the reception room, and she kept them there, not turning to look at his mother. Her silence only served to stoke the flames of tension that licked around the room, but she didn’t seem phased by its stifling presence. Ember, on the other hand, was unsettled, delicately massaging Kali’s fingers as she turned to her mother to answer on Kali’s behalf.
