The courtroom was packed, the air thick with tension. Nathan and Payson sat in the defendants' chairs, their faces etched with worry. Sarah and Dalvin sat on the opposite side, their eyes red-rimmed from crying.
Judge Thompson, a stern-looking woman with a reputation for being tough, entered the courtroom and took her seat. She adjusted her glasses and surveyed the room before focusing on Nathan and Payson.
"So, Mr. Nathan and Mrs. Payson, you are here today to face charges of negligence and manslaughter in the death of Pink, the daughter of Mrs. Sarah. How do you plead?"
