Jacob said, “in case you’re finding it a little hard to understand.”
He cleared his throat, fixing his gaze on me. “Who is Mr. Damon Vyon to you, Miss Paulman? A simple answer would do.”
Taking deep, calming breaths, I decided to give this a try. “Family,” I said in a small voice, my mouth miles away from the mic on the stand.
“Speak into the mic, witness,” the judge called, “we can’t hear you. We’re in a courtroom. Now, repeat yourself?”
“Family,” I repeated in a bolder, clearer voice, lifting my head to stare at the wall behind the judge’s head. “Damon Vyon is family to me.”
