Chapter 35 POV: Damian Cross The call comes at 2:17 a.m. That alone tells me it isn’t good. People don’t call at that hour unless something is bleeding, burning, or about to detonate. I’m awake anyway, sitting in the dark with a glass of water I haven’t touched, staring at a wall like it might confess something if I look long enough. The phone vibrates once. Then again.

“OH MY GODDESS DYELON! IT WAS SO SCARY IN THERE. I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO DIE! IT WAS A BIG EXPLOSION AND THE TUNNEL DOOR WAS BLOCKED AND THE ROOM WAS FILLING WITH SO MUCH SMOKE. I WAS SO AFRAID I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SAVE OUR DAUGHTER OR SEE YOU AGAIN!” Dilara cried throwing herself and her daughter into Dyelon's arms. Dyelon hugged both Dilara and his daughter. “Where is everyone, are they coming out?” Dyelon pulled away from his family looking at the door as more of Dom's men came out.

Nobody answered. Which was answer enough. Then Damian's phone vibrated. A message. He looked at it. And immediately stood. The movement startled everyone. "What is it?" Amara asked. Damian's expression hardened. "We have a problem." Tobe laughed nervously. "That's becoming repetitive." Nobody smiled. Damian turned the phone around. One photograph. Nothing else. No text. No explanation. Just a photograph. Amara moved closer. And felt her stomach drop. The image showed a cemetery.

Every sound—the whisper of the wind, the creak of the floor—was amplified in the silence, a reminder that danger was near. Ethan appeared at her window once more, a silent shadow of reassurance. “Every day, the noose tightens,” he said softly. “We cannot falter, not once. He walked up to me, then stopped just inches away. “You were supposed to be safe here.” I forced a small smile. “You say that like this place isn’t run by the mafia.” He didn’t laugh. Instead, he reached out and touched my chin. “I’m trying, Christy.” His voice was softer now. “I know,” I said.

“If he’s really hiding her in one of those bunkers, who knows what tricks he has up his sleeves?” Damian met her gaze, his eyes dark, sharp, unwavering. “He doesn't scare me,” he said coldly. “I’ll walk through every single one his traps if it means getting her out.” He turned and strode toward the exit, Cole right beside him. Outside, the early light barely cut through the mist that hung over the forgotten district. The cracked roads, the hollow wind whistling through broken windows, the quiet dread that hung over the place. It all screamed of the danger below.

I laughed. “It looks like those photos of the milky way.” “In a good or bad way.” “In a way you could get lost staring into your eyes.” “Very romantic.” I smiled and leaned back in the seat. Danger was quiet as he drove the rest of the way. He stopped, pulling into what seemed like a parking garage. Getting out, he opened the door for me and I jumped out. Following him to the elevator, he closed the gate and was waited as it rose up. It got to a floor and Danger pressed his finger on a thumb print scanner that popped out. He entered a code and the door opened. Loud electronic music was playing and I smelled week old pizza and socks that were dirtier than a week. I wrinkled my nose for a seco

I walked away, leaving Lillian and Danielle behind in the destroyed living room, and made my way upstairs. Roars and shouts shook the walls, vibrating through the halls like an earthquake. Damien was furious. He wasn’t just angry—he was desperate. His mate was in danger, and he didn’t understand what was happening. Someone was threatening me, the person he swore to protect. I knew this because I felt every single one of his emotions. Standing in front of the bedroom door, I took a deep breath and pushed it open.

Immediately after Damien stepped into his hotel suite and started walking towards his wardrobe, he noticed a red light beeping beside the room cushion. He moved towards it and quickly realized it was a fixed bomb. Damien knew it would be too dangerous and too late to try disarming it, so he sprinted towards the door. Just as he managed to open it and run out, the explosion went off, and the force flung him against the opposite wall. He hit his back and head, falling unconscious instantly.
