Staring at him deeply, little by little, I slowly began to understand everything. I rejected him not because I don't like him on that level. I was afraid. I was so afraid to break my own principles. I was afraid that I might end up being enslaved by my emotions. I was afraid I'd end up getting consumed by that feeling. I put him on the pedestal because that’s what I think is right. I let my mind control everything that I ended up lying to myself.

It's kind of funny seeing a guy as confident and powerful and dangerous-looking stuttering like a 5 year old, but the situation is stopling me from laughing. You are encouraging defiance.” Damien shifted in his seat. Elara noticed. “I’m encouraging honesty,” she replied. “If that feels like defiance, maybe look at what you’re asking people to lie about.”

It is accountability where silence would be complicity.” The murmurs that followed were faint, but I heard them all. The council was unsettled by the firmness in my voice. They were not used to being addressed with clarity and challenge rather than fear. Kaelen’s presence beside me reinforced that I was not alone, that the consequences were calculated but not paralyzing.

“Don't you dare.” “Don’t what?” he murmured. “Say his name? The Alpha?” The title rolled off his tongue like mockery, and that was enough to rip the last of my restraint away. I twisted hard, slamming the chair leg against the floor, once, twice, again, until the wood cracked. My wrists screamed, but one of the ropes loosened. I didn’t care about pain. Not now. “Lesson number one,” he said, watching me struggle, his voice still infuriatingly calm. “Defiance doesn’t make you strong. It makes you predictable.”

Everything in me was telling me to run, to get the fuck out of here and now. *Except me! I’m not telling you that, we’re okay here,* my wolf said. *Stay outta this,* I warned, hoping she’d shut up. My eyes darted to Javier but his back was to me. I had no clue what he was thinking or what his face looked like. There was no way he’d go easily, quietly. No way he’d just surrender, even at the command of his leader. Anyone out here could sense his anger, he was literally ready to blow a gasket. A man with his back against the wall, with nothing to lose is absolutely the worst kind of dangerous.

Something inside me coils tight, ready to strike. “Treason,” I say, the word sharp and deliberate. “That’s what this is.” Let them hear it. Let them understand the weight of what he’s doing. “You’re defying authority in front of the entire pack,” I continue. “Undermining order. Creating instability.” Everything I’ve worked to control..... “And for what?” I press. “For her?”

I tugged at my hand, instinctively trying to pull away, but his grip tightened just enough to remind me I wasn’t going anywhere unless he allowed it. I should have told him to fuck off. The words were right there, sharp and ready on my tongue. I should have reminded him that who I spoke to, and why, was none of his business. But one look into his eyes stole the fight right out of me. There was something dangerous in them. Not just anger, something deeper. Something that made defiance feel less like bravery and more like a mistake I wouldn’t recover from.
