Pages scatter like confetti across the polished floor. I curse under my breath and crouch to gather them. A shadow looms beside me. Damon Hart kneels. He picks up a page, fingers brushing mine.

But please, Anna, don't go with anybody without speaking to me first. Once my men arrive, demand that you speak to me directly so I can confirm that you are in safe hands, alright?" Her voice quivered slightly as she responded, her uncertainty palpable. "Okay," she managed, her throat clearing as she swallowed her apprehension. "Okay. What about you? Are you also in danger?" I hesitated for a moment, knowing that the truth would only escalate her fears. I couldn't bear to burden her with the weight of my own vulnerability. "No, everything is fine over
