I glance at him, surprised by the warning in his voice. It’s foreboding, almost like his words are coming from the Waters themselves, and not from him.
River, of course, mutters something under his breath, his usual arrogance slipping back into place as he stretches out on his blanket. I ignore him, focusing instead on the quiet, steady rhythm of Maerilee’s breathing.
As the others settle in for the night, I keep my eyes on the shadows, my senses alert. The Bright Waters may hold the answers we’re searching for, but I know better than to let my guard down. Danger is always waiting, always lurking just out of sight.
