“Stay back!” Seraphine’s voice rang out, sharp as thunder. She lifted her hand, and the shadows twisted into phantoms again. Dozens of them, their hollow eyes glowing, their claws long and jagged.
The creatures rushed forward, their screams chilling the air.
Damien roared, breaking through the barrier, his body a blur of golden fur and muscle. He ripped into the phantoms, tearing one apart with his teeth, his claws shredding another. The air filled with black smoke as the creatures dissolved, but more kept coming, circling, snapping, dragging at his limbs.
