The oldest man in the group spoke. Dante walked towards the circle. “Kneel!”the old man said and Dante got on his knees, then the old man walked out of the circle, and the man holding the book came forward. The sacred text lay open in front of Dante — an ancient ledger bound in cracked leather. Its pages bore the ink of countless oaths, the names of those who had risen and fallen.. “Repeat after me,” the old man intoned, his voice a low rumble. For the first time, I saw Dante’s hands tremble. He was scared. He placed his hand on the ledger. The silver knife glinted, its blade etched with symbols—the head of a lion, which a dagger pierced through.

Dante’s car—his new armoured black coupe was now a roaring inferno, flames clawed up toward the sky like hands desperate to escape. My heart stopped. I’d just stepped away from it. Not even thirty seconds ago, he was supposed to climb in after me. He was supposed to—My stomach twisted viciously. “Dante—?” The name tore out of my throat, raw. It barely sounded at all.The ringing in my ears swallowed the word whole.

He read it slowly, at the pace the prose demanded, and when he finished he sat with it for a moment before going to find Elian. "The first chapter," he said, in the garden. "What does it need?" Elian said. He was at the south bed — the spring work, the preparation for the third year of garlic, which would go in in November and produce in June and be, if the pattern held, the best yet. "Nothing," Dante said. "It's complete." "Complete meaning—" "Complete meaning it's the truest first chapter of the four," Dante said. "It holds the whole novel in it. The whole question."

Third-Person POV The flames shot toward the sky. Lina, whom Dante had left behind, was swallowed up by the blazing fire within seconds. The report slipped from Dante's fingers as he stiffly turned around and looked at the sea of fire that was devoid of any human silhouettes. The Underboss' statement about the death of Lina's Padre, Giacomo Vittori, seemed to overlap with the reality that Lina had also perished in the explosion. Something seemed to snap within Dante's mind, causing him to spit out a mouthful of blood. He let out an anguished howl before he fell to his knees among the burning debris.

Dante abandoned the van a mile out, navigating the treacherous, windswept ridgeline on foot. He moved with a predator’s instinct, his silhouette merging with the granite crags. He was just ink, and the white page was poison to him. Dante felt the chains on his legs vanish. He raced to June, jumping over the fading words. “June, look at the book!” Dante shouted. The list of names inside was shifting. The red ink turned black. The names gathered together, twisting into a new shape. A giant door appeared, right in the middle of the white page—made from the same dark wood as the book.

“Not survival, not love, not desire. But you… you can take it. You’re ready for it. And I’ll be there, testing you, watching you, pushing you… until you know exactly how far you can go.” The city hummed below them, distant and insignificant. All that mattered was Dante, the heat of his body, the magnetic pull between them, and the dangerous fire building inside her. She knew, with absolute certainty, that she could never go back to the life she had before tonight. Because now, she had crossed the first line—and Dante was showing her that every line after this would burn.

It’s the face of the Original Sinner—the man who stole the fire from the stars in the first place. "It's time to pay the interest, Zora," Dante says, but his voice is a chorus of a billion voices. The Spire begins to tilt. The "Foreclosure" has just become a Rebellion.

Lorenzo snarled, swiping at Robert and carving claw marks into his shirt as he sent him flying and focused on his new target. “Give me the book! Now!” he screamed, his many voices so loud that I had to cover my ears and just in time too because I heard glass shatter in the distance. Dante glared at him, the book tucked securely under his arm. “If you want it so bad, come and get it!” Without hesitation, Lorenzo pounced on Dante but he was too late. He passed the book to me and grabbed Lorenzo, pinning him down to the ground. “Let go of me! Now!”
