The rain had stopped, leaving the streets below wet and glowing from neon lights. Nina’s heart was still pounding, her hands trembling slightly as she gripped the envelope with Marco’s information. She had stepped fully into Dante’s world tonight, and she could already feel that nothing would ever be ordinary again. The loft door closed behind her, and Dante was already there, leaning against the window, arms crossed. The city lights bounced off his sharp features, making him look untouchable and terrifyingly close. “You made it back,” he said without turning, voice low, calm, and just a little dangerous. “I… yeah,” Nina said, her voice shaking. “It worked. I did what you asked.” Dante finally looked at her. His eyes were dark, intense, scanning her like he could see straight through her. “Good. But I didn’t ask for it to work. I asked for it to be perfect. And that… takes more than following instructions.” She swallowed. “I… I did my best.” He stepped closer, slow and deliberate, so that the distance between them felt both tiny and enormous. “Your best isn’t enough,” he said softly. “Not yet. You have to move without thinking, act without hesitation… or you get hurt. Or worse.” Nina’s chest tightened. His nearness made her pulse spike in ways she didn’t understand. “I—I’ll do better,” she whispered. “You will,” he said, almost a growl, moving even closer. She could feel the heat from his body, smell the faint leather and something darker. “But it’s not about doing better. It’s about knowing yourself. Knowing what you want—and what you’re willing to risk.” Her breath caught. “And you?” she asked, barely a whisper. “What do you want?” Dante paused, his eyes holding hers, sharp and intense. “I want you to survive tonight, and every night after,” he said. “But if you’re honest… I want this. You. The way you move, the way you think, the way you feel when danger and desire mix. That’s what I want.” Her stomach fluttered, a dangerous heat spreading through her. “I don’t… I don’t know if I can handle all of this,” she admitted, voice trembling. “You… you’re too much.” He didn’t step back. He didn’t need to. His presence alone was enough to pull her in. “Too much?” he asked, leaning just close enough that she could feel it. “You think I’m too much? Maybe. But it’s not about me. It’s about you. About seeing if you can take it. See if you can keep your head when the fire is right in front of you. Can you?” She wanted to step back, to regain control, but she didn’t. She wanted him to stay. She wanted to see how far this dangerous attraction could go. “I… I don’t know,” she said honestly, her voice barely above a whisper. He smiled, just the faintest, sharp grin. “Good. Because not knowing—that’s where it starts. That’s where you learn. And I’ll be here, testing you, pushing you… until you do.” His hand brushed a strand of wet hair from her face. Light, teasing, almost casual—but it sent electricity through her. She shivered. “Dante… you’re impossible,” she said. “And you’re curious,” he said, voice dropping low, almost a growl. “Curious enough to step into danger, curious enough to keep moving forward even when every instinct says run. That’s why I picked you. That’s why I keep you close.” Her pulse raced faster. The tension between them was no longer subtle. It was thick, alive, and impossible to ignore. She wanted to look away, but she couldn’t. Every inch of him demanded attention, and she felt herself burning for it—and for him. “Do you trust me?” he asked suddenly, voice quiet but heavy. She hesitated. “I… I think so.” “Think isn’t enough,” he said, a sharp edge to his tone. “You have to know. You have to feel it. Trust me, and do it fully. Or this world will chew you up and spit you out.” Her knees threatened to give way. She hated that she was trembling, but she wanted more. His presence was intoxicating, dangerous, and thrilling all at once. He stepped closer, close enough that she could feel his warmth, the tension in his body like a silent warning. “This fire,” he said softly, “it’s not a mistake. Desire, danger, instinct—they’re all connected. You feel it now, don’t you?” “Yes,” she whispered, heat rising through her chest. “I feel it.” “Good,” he said, voice low, brushing his hand along her arm. “Because this is just the start. You feel it tonight, and tomorrow it will get harder. You’ll need control, but you’ll need this too—this… desire, this fire. It will save you if you use it right. And it can destroy you if you don’t.” Her pulse was hammering. The loft, the city outside, the neon lights—all of it faded away, leaving just the two of them in a charged, tense silence. She wanted him, she feared him, she wanted to resist him, and she couldn’t. “You’re learning fast,” he said, moving even closer so that the air between them felt like a live wire. “Fast enough that I can’t look away. You’re fire, Nina. You’re unpredictable. And I like that.” She swallowed hard, trying to steady her racing heart. “And if I fail?” He smiled, sharp and dangerous. “Then you learn. You adapt. You survive. Or… you don’t.” His gaze dropped to her lips, just for a fraction of a second, and the heat in the room became unbearable. Nina’s legs shook, and she pressed herself against the edge of a chair. She wanted him, but she was scared. She wanted him to touch her, but she also wanted to run. Fear, adrenaline, desire—it all twisted inside her in a way that left her dizzy. Dante’s hand brushed hers, guiding her slightly. “This is your lesson tonight,” he said. “Desire is not weakness. It’s power. And when you learn to use it… you’ll be unstoppable.” Her breath hitched. “You make it sound so… easy,” she said, half-laughing, half-whimpering. “Nothing in this world is easy,” he said, his lips dangerously close to her ear now. “Not survival, not love, not desire. But you… you can take it. You’re ready for it. And I’ll be there, testing you, watching you, pushing you… until you know exactly how far you can go.” The city hummed below them, distant and insignificant. All that mattered was Dante, the heat of his body, the magnetic pull between them, and the dangerous fire building inside her. She knew, with absolute certainty, that she could never go back to the life she had before tonight. Because now, she had crossed the first line—and Dante was showing her that every line after this would burn.

The city lights outside flickered against the glass, painting the apartment in shades of gold and shadow. Nina sat on the edge of the couch, knees drawn close, heart hammering in her chest. Dante leaned against the wall nearby, arms crossed, and eyes that seemed to see straight through her.“You’re thinking too much,” he said, voice low, husky, teasing.“I can’t stop,” she admitted, her fingers brushing at the edge of the blanket around her. “Everything that happened today, everything we found out… it’s too much.”He walked toward her slowly, each step deliberate. “Maybe,” he murmured, “you’re thinking about me too much.”Nina’s chest fluttered. “Me? You think I—” She stopped herself, realizing her own words sounded like a confession she wasn’t ready to give.Dante closed the distance between them, leaning down so their eyes met. “Don’t pretend,” he whispered. “You feel it, don’t you?”Heat pooled in her stomach. She wanted to deny it, to push back, but she couldn’t. “I… maybe,” she a

  • WHEN POWER LEARNS TO KNEEL    CHAPTER 11: TRUTH HAS A PULSE

Nina Romano did not sleep. She lay beside Dante Moretti in the quiet apartment, staring at the ceiling as the first gray light of morning filtered through the curtains. His arm was draped over her waist, heavy and warm, grounding in a way she both craved and feared. Every time she closed her eyes, the same thought returned, sharp and relentless.I was placed in his life. The idea crawled under her skin. It made every memory feel suspect. Every laugh. Every argument. Every moment she had believed was chance.Dante stirred beside her, his fingers tightening slightly against her side. He did not open his eyes, but his voice came out low and rough.“You’re awake.”“Yes,” Nina said softly. He exhaled and shifted, propping himself on one elbow so he could see her face. His expression was tired, but alert, like he had been fighting his own thoughts all night too.“You’re thinking again,” he said. She let out a breath that trembled. “I do not know how to stop.”He nodded slowly. “Me neither.”

  • WHEN POWER LEARNS TO KNEEL    CHAPTER 10: BOUND BY SECRETS

Nina sat frozen on the edge of the couch, her hands gripping the cushion like she could hold herself together if she squeezed hard enough. Dante stood a few feet away, the shadows from the lamp casting lines across his sharp features. His eyes, usually so warm, were dark, unreadable, like he had just learned a truth that might shatter him completely.“Why didn’t you tell me?” Dante’s voice was low, barely above a whisper, but it carried a weight that made the air between them heavy.“I—I didn’t know how,” Nina said, her voice trembling. “I didn’t know if I would even survive if I told you. I thought keeping it a secret would protect me.”Dante ran his hand through his hair, pacing in silence for a few moments before he finally spoke again. “Protect you? Or protect them? Protect the people who ruined your father’s life?”“It’s not that simple,” Nina said, finally standing, her eyes fierce now, like fire had replaced the fear. “Everything I’ve done, every step I’ve taken, was to survive

  • WHEN POWER LEARNS TO KNEEL    CHAPTER 9: THE TRUTH THAT BREAKS THE GROUND BENEATH THEM

Nina did not sleep. She lay on her side facing the wall, eyes open, breath shallow, listening to the quiet rhythm of the city beyond the glass. Morning had not fully arrived yet. The room was still dim, wrapped in that fragile hour between night and day. Dante was behind her. She could feel his presence without touching him. The weight of it pressed into her back like an unanswered question.Something had shifted. She had felt it the night before. Not in his hands or his mouth or the way his voice had dropped when he said her name. It was deeper than that. Something buried under restraint. Something unfinished.Dante moved slightly, the bed dipping under his weight. He had not slept either. She knew that now. His breathing had been too controlled. Too aware.“You are awake,” he said quietly.“So are you.”He did not deny it.She rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling. The air between them felt tight, stretched thin.“You have been watching me like you are waiting for something

The room still smelled like heat and skin.Nina sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers curled into the sheets, her pulse loud in her ears. Dante stood a few steps away, jacket discarded, shirt unbuttoned just enough to show skin she had already memorized without touching again.Neither of them spoke. They didn’t need to.“You’re thinking too much,” Dante finally said, his voice lower than before.Nina let out a shaky breath. “You don’t get to tell me what I’m thinking.”A slow smile tugged at his mouth. Dangerous. Knowing.“I do,” he replied. “Your body gives you away.”She looked up at him sharply. “Don’t.”“Don’t what?”“Don’t look at me like that.”He moved closer, unhurried, like he had all the time in the world. “Like what?”“Like you already own me.”He stopped inches away. Too close. Too far.“I don’t own you,” he said quietly. “If I did, you wouldn’t be shaking.”She hated that he noticed. Hated that he was right.“Then why does it feel like I’m losing control every time you’

  • WHEN POWER LEARNS TO KNEEL    CHAPTER 7: THE LAST LINE

Nina did not sleep again after he left the room. Her body was too awake, nerves buzzing like they had been touched and forgotten on purpose. She lay on her side, staring at the pale ceiling, replaying the way his hand had felt. The way his voice had sounded when he told her to stay with him. Not commanding. Not cold. Almost… uncertain. That was the dangerous part. When the knock came, she nearly jumped. A soft one. Polite. Wrong for the kind of place she was in. “Come in,” she said. A woman stepped inside pushing a small cart. Coffee. Bread. Fruit arranged too neatly. She smiled like nothing in this building was illegal. “Mr. Moretti said you should eat,” the woman said. Nina nodded. “Thank you.” The door closed again. Locked from the outside. Not aggressively. Just enough to remind her. She ate slowly, forcing herself to calm down. To think. To remember she was not supposed to be here feeling like this. She had been scared of Dante when she first met him. She should still be
