Andrei kicked Uncle Dima’s ribs, aiming his army-booted foot so unerringly that the crawling man was almost lifted off the ground and crashed into the hatchet-faced woman. The rest paused, disoriented. They seemed raw and unused to their blindness.

I could already feel his gaze—steady, unrelenting—cutting across the room. I leaned close to Daphne and whispered, “Go.” She looked up at me, eyes wide with confusion. “It’s okay,” I murmured, forcing calm into my tone. “After all, I’m Alexander’s sister-in-law. He won’t push me too hard. You go first.” Daphne hesitated, glancing over my shoulder toward the door. Seeing he made no move to stop her, she looked as if she’d been granted a pardon and scrambled to her feet.

"Mine." Gideon turned. His older sister, Daphne Prescott, walked toward him in a sharp black blazer. Long waves fell over her shoulders, and her heels struck the floor with calm, measured precision.
