AT FRANCESCA’S PENTHOUSE The penthouse lights were low, warm, and expensive. Francesca sat on the edge of the long white couch, legs crossed, lips painted deep red. She held a glass of wine like it was a weapon. She watched Mr. Blackwood with a smirk. Mr. Black stood near the window, back to her, hands in his pockets. His shoulders were tense.

No pussy talk in front of Sis. “How is it going with the Russians?” Dark asked, and now that I am very sure Warg gave him control back, at first I was a bit confused. “You have bigger problems than worrying about the Russians. Gail has been sneaky, and I hate that.” Dark snorted, lifting a tumbler of bourbon to his lips. He didn’t say anything but just stared off into the distance for a considerable amount of time before turning his attention back to the tumbler that was in his hand, taking a sip from it, and then speaking.

🌹 Damien 🌹 The underground safehouse was dimly lit, the harsh fluorescent lights flickering intermittently as the team settled into a rare moment of calm. The air was thick with exhaustion, the weight of their near-constant battle settling heavily on each member of the group. Damien leaned against a table, eyes closed, taking in the muffled sounds of distant gunfire and the steady hum of the bunker’s generators. It had been a long day—too long. The chaos of the mission still lingered in his mind, but for the first time in days, the team had found a brief window to breathe. They were alive. For now, that was enough.

The heavy wooden door opened slowly, revealing a sliver of darkness that widened into the mansion's vast entry hall. My heart hammered against my ribs. Caden stood there, looking impossibly calm. He wore dark pants and a loose white shirt, sleeves rolled up, showing strong forearms. His eyes, dark and sharp, met mine, and a slow, unsettling smile spread across his face. "Right on time, Maeve," he said, his voice a low rumble that filled the huge, echoing space. "Come in. Don't be shy."

Moonlight, weak and filtered through the storm clouds, caught the sharp edge of a paperweight, a solid crystal block containing a fossilized fern, a relic from a time when life was simpler, buried under millennia of pressure. It felt apt.
