Dark of Night Copyright 2019 Emily Goodwin Chapter One “What do you see when you look at this one?” The doctor holds up a card, showcasing an ink splotch that’s twisted and creepy, with eyes that follow you no matter where you go. I look at it, heart hammering away inside my chest. The mess of ink on the white paper reminds me of the monster that lurks in Nana and Papa’s basement, the one that tried to get Abby and Scott to go downstairs with it.

The heavy main door of Caden's mansion clicked shut behind me. The sound didn't offer freedom; it sealed me into a new kind of prison. The bright afternoon sun felt too harsh, mocking the darkness that had just settled deep inside me. I was outside, yes, but no longer my own. The air felt thick, heavy with the weight of the deal. My limbs felt weak, like every bone had turned to water. I had agreed. I had sold myself, not just for money now, but for Caden’s sinister game.

His jaw was sharp, his cheekbones high, and his lips, a dark, rich red against his pale skin, were a promise of cruelty and pleasure. His eyes, the color of a stormy sky just before a great tempest, were fixed on me, and in them, I saw an ancient, knowing light that mirrored my own. They were not merely a color; they were a window into a universe of darkness, a silent, all-consuming void. They were a pair of black holes pulling me closer, swallowing all light and sound. He was exactly as I had seen him in my vision. His clothes were of woven darkness, a regal suit that shifted and flowed as if it were a living thing.

I take my food to the lounge to eat while watching TV. When I'm not dancing, I'm cooking and watching series. Mostly thriller and suspense. Believe me, I get scared, but thriller is better than horror. It's mostly blood and guns but with horror? You'll come across creatures that don't even exist yet feel real because of how scary they are. You'll believe there's a Darkasher somewhere out there.

I sigh. He gives me a wide smile, one that makes my heart beat faster. "Whoever said darkness is evil did not have the depth of mind to cross the line and go beyond his own limitations. Darkness is much more than a behavioral tendency, it is a world trapped inside a universe itself; where humanity and any other race chooses to hide its most decadent thoughts, needs, and desires... I said as I grip on his wrist. "Of course, you'll go with me..." Well, that's a relief. Or he's just sca-- "it's so dark there. I forgot to turn on the lights..." that's it, he's just scared. This kid is really scared of the dark. I'm glad I'm the one who's blind and not him. He would probably lose his sanity if he woke up with seeing nothing but darkness.
