Day 26. Five days left. I wake up before the sun. The room is quiet, purged of the ghosts of last night. I don't reach for the grey uniform. I don't reach for the black jeans. I open the closet door. The clothes I packed are still on the floor, a pile of black fabric meant for running. But running is plan B. Plan A is winning. I pull out a silk robe. It’s champagne-colored, floor-length, with wide sleeves that ripple like water. Spadino bought it for me weeks ago, a joke about dressing up the doll.

Counting the hours until Monday morning. Sunday night, I pack my school bag with manic attention. I choose my underwear , black, lace , with a conspirator's smile. No one will see them. Except perhaps the one for whom it's a silent message, a reminder beneath the uniform. I fall asleep with difficulty, my mind alert. Monday. 6:45 AM. I'm already dressed. The uniform , pleated gray skirt, white blouse, navy blue V-neck sweater , feels like a disguise. A ridiculous armor over my secrets. The marks are less vivid but still visible. I put on the uniform that Linda (some woman who said she'll be working for us) left on my desk last night and I put it on as fast as I can. The uniform is actually kinda nice, the black skirt is short but not too much, and it somehow makes my butt bigger. The shirt is grey with a big logo and I even get to wear a cute bowtie. It looks pretty on me and makes me excited because I've never worn a uniform to school before.
