The rain outside the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Battery Park residence was coming down in steady, vertical grey sheets, blurring the Hudson River and the distant outline of the Statue of Liberty into a quiet, slate-colored haze.
It was four-fifteen on a Tuesday afternoon. The noise of Wall Street, the bells, the shouting on the floor, the flashing green tickers on the CNBC screens, was forty floors down and three blocks away, completely silenced by triple-paned acoustical glass.
