CHAPTER SIXTY-EIGHT Rachel~ I sat up in a sweat just after 3am. Flashes of a nightmare still etched into my eyelids. A large dark crow swallowed me whole. I fought and fought, but down its beak I went. I slithered down its throat and even though I tried to crawl back out but couldn’t make any progress. At last I was running out of air. That’s what forced me to wake up. The feeling that I wasn’t getting any air and was dying.

But this was not what Caitlin wanted: she needed to heal Scarlet, not kill her. As she finished yet another book and slid it aside, with still no mention of healing anywhere, she began to feel a sense of despair. She lifted the final book on the stack, a small, leather-bound volume with a red spine, entitled De Fascino Libri Tres by Leonardo Vairo. Caitlin summoned her knowledge of Latin, and knew that translated to: Three Books of Charms, Spells and Sorceries.

I heard the clicking of camera shutters, but no one called the ambulance. My blood drained dry. My body became cold. Finally, Yvette Skye was no more. I died all alone at the corner of the street. No one cared. My corpse was not a pretty sight. My eyes were wide, unseeing, and there was a large hole in my stomach. My legs were twisted together. One of my arms was flung by the side of the road. My legs were useless now. I was ugly. No wonder the little girl cried. Floating in the air, I stared at my mutilated corpse.

I bit down and didn't make a sound. I thought about pine trees. My brothers' faces. Everything waiting on the other side of these walls. I pulled again. Third time — I collapsed my fingers, squeezed my hand into the smallest angle it would go, and wrenched. The leather gave. My hand flew free and hit the mattress. I didn't stop to breathe. Free hand on the left buckle, fingers working fast — and the chains dropped from the bedpost with a rattle that sounded, in that silent house, like a gunshot.

That’s what they were talking about! The sound of chains is even louder now, and when I look back down at my body, I see them. Like serpents circling my chest and waist, they are constantly moving, even now that I have died. But I can see them now, that must mean something. The sight of Demi is the only thing that can take my mind off this agonizing pain that I am feeling right now. Wait a minute, I died. These chains are supposed to break! Bending down, I touch the hot metal that has kept my powers and abilities bound all this time. Damn these chains.

Chains: I got up this morning and got ready for my day but didn't know what I was doing anymore. Everyday it is the exact same thing everyday I get up take a shower and go to the diner to see her after that I head to the club. Nobody knows how I feel about her hell I don't even think she knows. The first chain snapped. The sound ripped through the underground chamber, deep and unnatural, like the snarl of a beast awakening after centuries of restless sleep.
