Everything was just perfect. Until he woke me in the middle of the night and told me to get all the soft targets together in the back room. “Let’s go!” Jade was careful not to step on the small pool of blood surrounding the corpse on the floor. She averted her eyes, still shocked. That was the first time she had seen someone kill in cold blood. It wasn’t a pretty sight. “Faster!” Mei hissed. Moving faster, Jade followed Mei out of the cell and into an empty hallway. As they reached the end of the hallway, Mei raised her hand in a stopping motion. Jade noticed that Mei’s fingernails seemed longer than she remembered—in fact, they didn’t look like a normal human’s fingernails. Aside from being unusually long, they were curved, too—like the claws of a cat.

Leo and Luna swelled in size, each swiping with a paw, smashing zombie skulls to pieces. Silent Snowy followed, his snow-white fur gleaming, suddenly engulfed in vivid red flames. The fire roared, relentless and unyielding, consuming the entire street. Within moments, the zombie horde was annihilated. Snowy flicked his fluffy tail and leapt onto my shoulder. "Mama, this whole area is ours now. What's next?" What to do? I took the three cats to a government-constructed refuge and willingly submitted their genetic blood samples for the research and breeding of the next generation.

I said, breaking the silence. “Yes,” Kat said, and I hid a grin. She was going to have to work on this social thing. “How many dead and injured?” I asked. I had been helping with the removal of the fallen before I was summoned by Izzy to find Kat. “So far, eighteen dead. Thirty injured beyond what their wolf could heal.” He looked at me curiously. “Sir, I heard that you were stabbed. Forgive me for asking, but I’ve never met a werebear before. Does your bear heal your wounds?”

Snarling, he leapt and tore out the elf’s heart with his bare hand. Lily led the werecats, her panther darting and slashing through enemy ranks. Still, she saw the truth—they were bleeding too heavily. Casualties mounted. Darina and her she-wolves fought savagely, but too many of their sisters were falling, either broken or lifeless.

We stay like that for a good minute before he turns around to snarl at the trees. Between two oak trees, a pack of werecats yowls at us. Their bodies are entirely human except for the hair covering their skin and their faces of different cat species—some look like lions, while others resemble tigers or panthers. Their chests are bare, muscular, and hairy. But what they all have in common is the ready-to-kill expression. I brace myself, ready to summon flames. But unfortunately, they outnumber us. Victory seems hopeless, which is why I find it endearing that Blake appears unwilling to leave my side—he is standing so close I could touch him.

I went up to her, and asked her if she was ok, I know not the right question, how can she be ok, she just lost her mate. She doesn't reply nor she looks up at me. I inform her about coming to our territories, still no reaction, then a man and woman came by her side. I went away to look around. Gamma had collected everyone, there were hardly 10 to 12 left. I ordered my men to bury all the dead with respect.
