The last of the light was dying when the ground finally dropped away beneath our feet. We had been moving since the drone saturation forced us out of the shallow timber, pushing hard through broken forest and low ridges while the sky growled with distant engines. One more fighter had gone down in the retreat—quick, ugly, and final. The rest of us kept going because stopping meant the same end.

He hesitated. “If we retreat, it looks like guilt.” “If we stay, it becomes slaughter.” His jaw tightened.

But the thought of leaving Natalia and the twins in this place, with that monster… I couldn’t bear it. Just then, another warrior from Bloodmoon went down beside me, his throat torn open by a ruby-encrusted spear. I lunged out of the way just as another soldier came at me. “Fall back!” I heard my Beta shout. “Fall back!” The retreat had already begun, whether I liked it or not. Warriors were streaming out of the doors, trying to hold the line as they went. All the while, the Winter King’s soldiers pressed toward in a relentless barrage of marble flesh and slaughter.

My vision darkened at the edges. The battle raged on, but the rogues weren’t stopping. More poured from the shadows, endless as the tide. Derek’s jaw clenched. His golden eyes scanned the battlefield. We were losing. I swallowed. “Derek…” His grip tightened around me. “No.” Then, he threw his head back— And howled. --- The Last Resort The sound ripped through the battlefield. A call not for battle— But for retreat. Our warriors heard it. One by one, they pulled back, covering each other as they fought toward the last exit points.
