They all laughed, the sound filling the room with warmth.
"Let's have dinner." George said, and we all settled at the table. The spread was magnificent—roasted chicken, herb-roasted potatoes, seasoned vegetables, fresh bread, and desserts that looked far too expensive for an ordinary dinner.
"How about everyone else? I thought you were having a party."
"A party of four," he teased, his eyes twinkling.
"Deb wanted a close family circle."
"And you invited me. Thank you." My voice softened, genuinely touched.
