“What did you do last week, Finn?”
That made me laugh and helped in shutting Finn up.
We moved through the trees in silence, following the scent of deer tracks. The forest was darker than usual. The trees grew closer together, their branches weaving into a canopy that swallowed the sky.
“Eyes open,” Nicholas murmured, and I opened, keeping my eyes wide open.
An hour passed. Then two. The deer tracks grew fresh. Nicholas held up a fist. We stopped.
“The creek is half-a-mile north,” he said quietly. “Deer will water there. Finn, take the east ridge. Marta, to the west. Lyra, you stay with me.”
