“Clever girl.” She stops walking, lifts the bowl to the moonlight, and swirls my blood like wine. Then she looks at Dimitri. “Go on ahead,” she says lightly. “I’ll spread this myself. Without another word, Demetria turns and melts into the trees, humming, taking half my blood and all my hope with her. I lunge after her, screaming her name, but Dimitri backhands me so hard my ears ring and the night tilts sideways. I taste copper on my tongue.

She slipped her arm through Aleksander’s with the ease of someone who belonged there, her gaze sweeping over me with polite, icy disinterest.
