The power had gone out an hour ago, leaving them with only the glow of the fireplace and a few candles. “Here,” Derek said, handing her a glass as he sat on the other end of the couch. His shirt was unbuttoned at the top, revealing a glimpse of muscular chest. “This’ll warm you up.” Emma took a sip, the burn sliding down her throat. “Thanks. I didn’t think the storm would be this bad.” “Forecast said it might knock out power all night.” His voice was low. He stared into the fire, jaw tight. The tension between them had been building for days, stolen glances, accidental touches, long silences loaded with everything they refused to say.

Father and son took seats at a table to my left. My heart was still doing a weird painful flip-flop over Jacob when the door opened again. This time, it was Derek. My mouth went dry. He looked… hollow. Thinner and weaker with his usual swagger completely gone. But he was clean and dressed neatly. And right behind him with a smirk that made my blood run cold was Gerald Stormclaw. The bastard! He looked right at me and his smirk widened like he’d just won a prize. Derek’s eyes found mine. They were pleading, full of something I didn’t want to understand as he started moving toward the empty chair next to me.

He listened for a second, nodded flatly and ended the call. I leaned my head against the cold glass window. "You planned this, didn't you?" Derek tilted his head toward me, and I turned to look right back at him. The rain was dripping heavily off his dark hair, framing his sharp jawline. It was a frustratingly striking sight, but I forced the thought out of my head. I was too angry to be thinking about how good he looked. "Why would I want us to be stranded out here, Gabe?" Derek asked, his voice low but defensive. "Your anger is clearly blocking your sense of judgment."

I felt something go very cold and very clear inside my chest, because a man does not break down the door of a house at 9:47 on a Tuesday and know the name of the man on the floor by accident.
