Colt started forward. "Ah, ah." Derek pulled out a detonator. Small. Black. His thumb rested on the button. "See this? There are three more explosives planted around your compound. One near the garage. One by the dorms. One in the bar where all your brothers are having their little meeting." My legs nearly gave out. "Derek, please—" "Please?" His voice turned sharp. "You left me, Jenna. You stole my car. My money. You made me look weak." He took a step closer. "Do you know what happens to men who look weak? They lose everything."

“Promise.” I nodded once, even though promises felt like fragile things lately. “Promise.” Dawson came out forty minutes later looking… hollowed. Not worse, exactly. Not broken. Just stripped. Like he’d opened a door he’d been holding shut for years and the wind that rushed out had taken something with it. His eyes met mine. Storm grey. Tired. But there was a strange steadiness there too, as if naming the darkness didn’t feed it, it just made it visible. Liberty stood immediately, bouncing on the balls of her feet. “So? Did you hate it?”

Fuck. Every third full moon, Derek didn’t just get strong…he went berserk. Blind, unstoppable rage. I’d nearly wiped out entire villages twice before I learned to chain myself in the deepest cells until sunrise. I’d sworn never to let him loose again. Too many innocent lives could be lost. “Fuck!” I roared into the night. Derek whispered in my ear, voice smooth and tempting. “I don’t mind killing a few if it means finding her. Let me out. I’ll track her before dawn. We’ll bring our mate home.”

“I didn’t do anything wrong, Derek. You know that. You’re punishing me for nothing. Besides, you got me drunk. I didn’t do anything wrong.” Derek cocked his head to the side, pretending confusion. “Nothing wrong? Is that what you think? You’ve disrespected me. Challenged my authority. That alone is deserving of punishment.” Lyra shook her head and spoke with a firm voice. “I haven’t challenged you. I haven’t disrespected you. All I wanted was to live my life, free from you.” Derek’s expression turned dark before he reached for her chin, making her look at him. “Free from me? Lyra don’t forget that you are mine. Always have been and always will be mine.’”

I carefully unwrapped the cloth and opened the book. Her handwriting was beautiful but slightly slanted with age. I flipped through the first few pages, reading bits of her life, about her mate, her people, the early days of the pack before the Great War. Then, about halfway through, I saw a heading that made my heart skip a beat. “The Beast Beneath the Mountain” I sat down, reading carefully. “There is a darkness far older than our kind. A wolf not born of the Moon, but of chaos. His name is Derek.”

She said sounding very desperate. Exactly what I hated and more reasons I was doing everything to get Storm back. Storm had never been desperate. She gives me this willingness to want to chase her every single thing; meanwhile, this pest right here is clingy as hell. She wants to ride my dick nonstop in 24 hours and repeatedly and that's why I get very sick of her. Taking a deep breath, I sat on the other side of the bed, trying to remember what it was like trying to have sex with Storm. I tried and cracked my brains but couldn't even recall a thing.

Derek’s POV Rain slammed against the windows of my study like the gods themselves were furious. I stared at the storm, glass of scotch in hand, the burn in my throat no match for the one in my chest. Susana. The name alone twisted a blade inside me. Gone. Dead. Buried beneath layers of betrayal, silence, and a lie I told too many times to count It was for the good of the pack. I clenched the glass harder. “If it was the right thing why does it still feel like hell?”

"Derek is playing all sides. He's working with Luna to destroy Austin, and he's working with the humans to make himself look innocent." Austin's phone buzzed with another text message. This one was from Derek: "Austin, I have something that belongs to you. If you want it back, meet me at the old bridge in one hour. Come alone, or it gets destroyed forever." Austin showed the message to everyone. "What could Derek have that belongs to you?" Maya asked. Austin felt a terrible realization. "The pack records. Derek must have stolen our pack history records when he attacked our territory." Lydia looked confused. "Why would Derek want old papers?"

I nearly threw myself into his arms at the sound of it, but I held myself back and didn’t say a word. After some time had passed, Derrick let out an exhausted sigh, his head tilting to look up at the ceiling. “Goddess grant me strength.” The whispered words under his breath sends comfort through my body for an unknown reason. Who is this Goddess that he is talking about? And why does she bring me comfort? Derrick’s hand suddenly lashes out to grab hold of mine, pulling me from my thoughts and crashing me back into reality. The reality that Alpha Derrick Brennan has slept with his pack members and now wants to add me to the list of conquests.
