The specialized van Harlan had procured lay on its side, tires shredded, armored panels cratered by heavy-caliber impacts. Smoke, thick and chemical, curled from shattered electronics within. Rain lashed the scene, turning churned earth into bloody mud. Bodies. Three of Harlan’s trusted perimeter guards lay crumpled, expressions frozen in surprise or mid-shout. The violence had been swift, overwhelming, professional.

He wanted to work as a plain human, living on his salary. The car jumped through several massifs and then reached the real desert in the peripheral area. The endless yellow sand blocked all the passages to the core region of the rogues’ territory. Only the one who got the secret map could make it to the rogue’s magic city. Ragnar stepped on the brake and then got out of the car. It was almost in the middle of the day now. The wind was wild. And the sand was swirling. But the sky got even cloudier, suggesting there might be a terrible sandstorm coming close.
