Chapter 1 Part One: Rex Decides Petra had been bringing Rex to three different vets in four years. The first one had been fine technically but Rex didn’t like him and Rex was a better judge of character than most people Petra knew. The second had been good with Rex but condescending with Petra, explaining things to her as if she hadn’t been working with dogs for a decade. The third had retired. She’d gotten Dax Reyes’s name from another handler in her unit whose shepherd had gone through a complicated knee surgery there. The drive was twenty minutes further than her previous practice. She went anyway.

I stood up, adjusting my cufflinks, ready to see the name Caleb in black and white. "What is this?" I hissed, the coldness in my voice replaced by a rare, jagged confusion. "Sir," Dr. Aris said, sounding equally bewildered. "The DNA sample... it’s not human. It’s canine. Specifically, it appears to belong to a very healthy, three-year-old Golden Retriever."

“That whoever laid the traps hasn’t worked with any government agencies or companies that require fingerprinting, and they haven’t been processed by the police either. That’s not odd. More times than not, police won’t find a match in their system. The matches, if there are any at all, come up from comparing evidence to a suspect.” “Oh,” Zephyra said, slumping a little and trying not to show how disappointed she was. “However,” Richards jumped in. “I’ve sent in DNA found on the dead animals, and it finally came back. It belongs to a domestic dog breed, most likely a mastiff-type breed, though it’s not a purebred mastiff.”

No doubt it has night time vision. Before I can register what he’s doing, he’s taking a rock and smashing the screen. My heart flutters, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I’m still nervous. There could always be another camera we can’t see. But right now, my wolf isn’t going to give a damn. His isn’t either.

‘How did I not hear that? As she reaches for her badge, the door to the interrogation room opens. Her eyes open wide. That smell. Her body is taken over by shock. ‘It couldn’t be.’ She slowly turns her head towards the door looking directly at the man in the doorway. His big blue eyes were staring straight at her. “Matthew!?”

Not just me, but Drake’s helpers as well. It was because of their support for my mate that I made them members of the Detective Wolves, and take the lead in searching for Nex. I even trusted them to recruit more members who would be willing to help find her, not minding the fact that she has a white wolf. ‘Funny it is that you are the one telling me this,’ Beethoven said. ‘You sure this isn’t you trying to convince yourself more?’ Once again, I went silent at his statement. For he wasn’t wrong in making that assumption. ‘I need to get the pups.’ Without another word, I ended the link, and went to pick up Hailey and Helix. All while wondering just one thing.

It was them at that time. “That was the four of you? During the first detection class?” I murmured, and their eyes widened in shock. They could alter their entire presence! Manipulate what kind of smell they wanted to ooze out. Can a wolf actually do such a thing? “B-but how.. Dexter was obviously there too, during cl-classes. Wait.. Is he?” “Oh please. As if anyone would wonder if Dexter just sneak out after finding his pair.” Hatchett held my chin so that we could lock eyes.

“Tell me, what brought you here?” Macholo’s voice was respectful as he replied. “We stole a high-value Mercedes-Benz S-Class. We transferred money from the victim’s phone, took some jewelry, and...” He hesitated for a moment. “We also took a dog.” The Don raised an eyebrow. “A dog?” He sounded like it was something he wasn’t expecting. “What kind?” “An Australian shepherd,” Macholo replied. “A well-kept one.” The Don’s interest deepened. He leaned forward, tapping his pipe lightly against the ashtray. “An Australian shepherd, you say? That's a fine breed. Loyal, intelligent.”

Of course it is. “There’s more,” Matthew says, pulling my free hand. “We have a dog!” “A dog?” “Dante,” Zion explains with a smile that mixes pride and amusement. “We adopted him in the third week after you disappeared. Matthew needed something to take care of.” As if summoned, a golden retriever appears at the top of the stairs, his tail wagging with controlled enthusiasm. He approaches slowly, sniffing my outstretched hand before deciding I’m approved. “He’s trained for security,” Luka explains, pragmatic as always. “But he’s also good with kids.”
