And I was going to shatter him completely. The next evening, I dressed even more dangerously. A deep crimson dress that hugged my breasts and flared at my hips, the neckline plunging just enough to draw the eye. No bra. Black heels that made my legs look endless. I slipped into the church during the tail end of evening prayers, sliding into a back pew where I could watch him.

A part of me felt embarrassed from the thought, but another part felt a dangerous kind of excitement at the idea that he might have heard me begging for him. In the kitchen I pointed up at the high shelf where the fancy kettle was placed. Jake reached up easily. His shirt rode up a little and showed a bit of skin at his waist. I had to look away quickly before my thoughts ran away again. When he handed me the kettle our fingers brushed. That small touch sent another rush of heat through my body.

ZANE’S POV “I love you too, Zane,” she replied as she stared at me with glassy eyes. I set my empty glass down on the tray and stared back at her across the low table. The last of the fish and rice was gone. Outside the villa the sky had shifted into soft evening colors, pale gold melting into rose and then into a deeper blue at the edges. The lagoon reflected every change. The water that had been bright turquoise earlier now held longer shadows and a quieter surface.

I turned towards the front porch to see the quadruplets trying their best to compose themselves. Roxie and Blue's daughters looked almost identical to each other. Their blue and brown eyes stood out against their coffee-colored skin that was just a shade lighter than their mom's and uncle's. If it weren't for their different hair colors, it would be damn near impossible to tell them apart. Keahi's hair was azure blue, like the hottest flame. Dhara's was coal black with raven undertones like the deepest dirt. Sharia's was a blue-violet color, like the sky at the highest elevation. And Maya's was a dark navy blue like the deepest water.

“You should take this one. The quality is pretty good, and it’s easy to use.” “Okay.” A grin spreads over his face, then he asks, “What color do you want?” “Ah…what do I get to choose from?” “Lime, silver, violet, and graphite.” My eyebrows draw together. “What’s graphite?” Tiny lets out an amused chuckle. “It’s a dark grayish color.” “Uhm…” I nibble on my bottom lip while I think about which one I should choose, then say, “I’ll take the violet one.”

Unchanged yet so different. Staring back into the woman’s darkened eyes, he couldn’t help but feel a little stiff. She’d dyed her hair a medium brown, face brightened with brassy, lighter strands. Wanted to wrap his hands through the long, dark hair and tug at it as he pushed inside of her. Couldn’t understand why it had ever been any lighter. Wondered if she could see the lust that weighed in his stare. If she was looking at him in the very same way. If he’d simply imagined it.

He had the upper hand here—he controlled the air, the space itself—but Selena wasn't backing down. Her eyes burned with determination. The shadows writhed around her like a storm, wrapping around her arms, her legs, every part of her as if they were an extension of herself. "Get out of my way, Shane," she hissed, her voice sharp with fury as she twisted the shadows into thick coils and thrust them forward. The smoke wrapped around them, clashing, and the shadows sputtered out, disintegrating into thin air. Shane grinned, smug and unrelenting. "You're pathetic. My smoke will swallow your shadows, just like it swallows you."

Gray on the left and white on the right. I shade the right side with a full dark charcoal color. It is to symbolizes the weakness of the woman and the dark things she goes through throughout her life. While the other side, I shade with live and colorful shades, enlightens her dark side, and it also shows that she's still standing firm and brave even though she's lying about her true feelings and emotions. She's always on her presumptuous persona. A pretense. She needs that to live with the extreme pain she suffered her entire being.
