A slow, steady, rhythmic thumping that echoed through the car. "Is that... Isabella's?" Ivy whispered. "No," Dante said, his face turning a deathly pale grey. "Listen to the interval. The gap between the beats." Ivy listened. It wasn't a human heartbeat. It was a dual beat—two hearts pulsing in a perfect, synchronized rhythm. It was the sound of a merger.

Marcus Vance, carefully observing the live echocardiogram display on the monitor.
