I swallowed a sob but it still crawled out of me, shaking. “Please…” My knees nearly buckled as I clutched the divorce papers to my chest. “Please don’t separate me from my child…she needs her mother…” He just walked to the door and pulled it open, the hallway light spilling in behind him. “If I return and meet you here,” he said in a voice so calm it terrified me more than his shouting ever could. “You’re spending the rest of your miserable life in jail.”

I glared at him. "You must have gone crazy. Poverty must have damaged your brains." I said, staring at him in disgust. "You have no choice, if you want to save your mother." He said. "Well, I'm sorry. As much as I would love to help, it's no longer in my power. I and Alexander King are divorced." I said. "Not yet." He said. "You haven't signed the divorce papers yet, so you are still married under the law. And he is looking for you right now. You just have to go back to him."

I looked at her, and my voice cracked when I replied— “Because he said he’s not letting me go.
