Caleb cared so much about his father's approval, tried so hard to make Ethan happy. And Ethan couldn't even be bothered to be with him for the most important training session before his coming-of-age ceremony. Eighteen years old, just about to become an adult, and my Caleb died like that, on the Stone Pack's sacred land. "The Alpha's son is dead," Beta Marcus had told me last night, his voice trembling. "An ambush by a rival pack... We were too late." I knelt by Caleb, my hands shaking as I touched his pale face. The smell of blood filled the air, moonlight shining on his closed eyes.

All the while, I could feel Caleb’s eyes on me but I didn't dare turn back yet. “Why don't you go back in with aunt Christina I'll be right behind you” For the first time since coming out, Lucas seemed to finally notice Caleb standing behind me and I saw something click in his childlike eyes. I wondered if he recognised Caleb as the man in his dreams who looked like him. If he did, he didn't say anything. “I'll be right in” I muttered to Christina as she took Lucas inside. I finally mustered up the courage to turn. Caleb stood still like a statue. His gaze was fixed on me so intently, it felt like he could see into my soul but I couldn't tell what he was thinking.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX CALEB'S POV I stared at Howard for an answer, but he looked at me confused, like I was overthinking things, and honestly speaking, I was. “ANSWER ME,” I growled, walking towards him. “Your father is her son Caleb, Catherine might be terrible at parenting him but I am certain she loves Mr Miles with all her fucking heart, and the time of his death, Catherine was asleep,” He said, trying to understand why I thought my grandmother was the murderer.

" Caleb lost the last of his reason and collapsed to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably. When Gina saw this, she smiled triumphantly. But her smugness did not last long. Caleb grabbed the fruit knife on the table and rushed toward Gina. He plunged the knife into her chest, and she died from the wound.

Kyle ignored his flirting and said with a glare, “It doesn’t look like nothing to us. And what do you mean, poison and faking death? I was waiting for you to wake up, right outside the door.” Caleb ran a hand through his short hair. “I don’t have time to explain all of it, but whoever planned that explosion wants me dead. I was lucky enough to wake up and stop the nurse who tried to inject me with poison.” I frowned, thinking back to that day, and I was unconscious most of the day. “Did Cillian help you?” Kyle asked and went closer to him as Caleb sat down on the bed. “I went to the cafeteria to get us coffee, and he wasn’t there when I came back.”

She looked at his face as he slumped to the floor, as the life force began to leave him. His face was supposed to shift back. To Sam. Or Kyle. Or whoever was shape-shifting. But it did not. It was still Caleb. He was dying, and it was really him. Caitlin sunk to her knees beside him, and let out a long, horrific wail. It was the wail of a tortured animal. It had been Caleb along. Her one and only love. And she had killed him. Caleb lay there, looking up, and even though he was dying, even though she had killed him, he still smiled at her.

"You... you followed me?" "Yes." "Why?" "Because he wanted me to. Before he died." Caleb said simply." My breath caught. "He... he asked you to---" my voice broke. "You mean he knew he was going to die?" Caleb’s countenance shifted for a moment. "Sort of." He murmured." He suspected, so he left instructions just in case." I stepped backwards. "Did he also know he'd die by accident?" Caleb’s patience wore out. "That's enough Ava." His voice echoed. "You ask for the truth, but the moment you hear one, you run wild."

Then, he opened the flash drive I left behind and played the recordings. "You really think the Alpha would fall for someone as boring as you? I was never poisoned. I'm not dying. I made it all up. You'd be better off kneeling and begging me." It was Ruby's voice, dripping with malice and mockery. And then came my gentle, soft voice. "Caleb, if I'm no longer around, promise me you'll take care of yourself. Be happy." That was the final blow. Caleb collapsed to the ground, wailing in grief. "Caleb, maybe you should think about what kind of girl Cas would like. We can screen them one by one in Imperial City. Perhaps it will be quicker." Caleb was about to leave. Finn saw his complete lack of interest and glanced at him. "That information might uncover the reason for Cas's death." Caleb's body stiffened, and his lips formed a straight line. "I've looked into it. He had no interactions with any females."
